Rabbi Hillel Klein Z’L was born in Baracska, Hungary in 1849. He received his semekhah from Hildesheiner Rabbinical Seminary in Berlin and a doctorate from the University of Berlin. He served as a rabbi in Kiev from 1874-1880 and in Libau, Latvia from 1880-1890. With the rise of anti-semitism in Russia, Rav Klein was forced to leave the country. He was invited by the late Rabbi Jacob Joseph to come to Congregation Ohab Zedek on Norfolk Street. He served at Ohab Zedek from 1891-1926. Rabbi Klein served as president of the US Agudath Israel and honorary president of the Union of Orthodox Rabbis. The 100th Yarhzeit of Rabbi Hillel Klein Z’L , the first rabbi of Congregation Ohab Zedek, will be in March 2026.
