RABBI'S MESSAGE
Dear OZ family,
Rav Yaacov Emden comments on the invitation that opens the Maggid section of the Haggadah. We invite all who are hungry to come and eat, and all who need, to eat the Korban Pesach with us. Rav Emden considers that the second invitation is disingenuous. Surely by the time we are singing “Ha Lachma Anya”, it is too late to invite someone to eat the Korban Pesach. That invitation must already be tendered before the Korban Pesach is offered in the afternoon. Therefore, Rav Emden explains, we must say that we are repeating an invitation that was made earlier in the day. This dovetails very well with his explanation of the earlier invitation, for all who are hungry to come and eat.
Rav Emden explains that the invitation for all who are hungry to come and eat was also made earlier in the day and was specifically made to Gentiles. Erev Pesach is the perfect day to make a Kiddush Hashem by giving food to the Non-Jews among us. We have all this food that we need to dispossess. Wouldn’t it be better to give it to those who are hungry who are not commanded to refrain from eating Chametz on Pesach? So both invitations are made before the holiday starts.
To that end, we will have boxes in the shul lobby for food distribution before Pesach starting next week. You can leave all your Chametz in these boxes, and take part in the fulfillment of the first invitation. Regarding the second invitation, please indicate if you are will be on the West Side for Pesach and you’d like to have a guest for any of the 6 meals (2 Seders, 1 Friday night dinner and 3 lunches). Indicate also if you’d like to be hosted for any of these meals, and we’ll try to set everyone up for Yom Tov. You can contact Beverly at the office to get started.
It is a pleasure to welcome Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman for Shabbos, as our Scholar in Residence. The program is dedicated by the Weitzner family in memory of Ari’s father, Dr. Walter Weitzner, z”l. I welcome everyone to take part in all of Rabbi Berman’s lectures throughout Shabbos. The entire schedule is listed below.

- The Scholar in Residence Weekend is dedicated by the Weitzner Family, in memory of Ari's father Dr. Walter Weitzner z'l
- Rabbi Dr. Joshua Berman is a professor of Tanakh at Bar-Ilan University. A graduate of Princeton University, Rabbi Berman received his semikhah from the Rabbanut HaRashit Le-Yisrael, after learning for eight years at Yeshivat Har-Etzion. He is the author of The Temple: Its Symbolism and Meaning Then and Now (Jason Arnonson, 1995), Created Equal: How the Bible Broke with Ancient Political Thought (Oxford, 2008), a National Jewish Book Award Finalist in Scholarship, and most recently, Inconsistency in the Torah: Ancient Literary Convention and the Limits of Source Criticism (Oxford, 2017). His articles and essays have appeared in Mosaic Magazine and the Wall Street Journal. He is currently at work on his next book, Orthodoxy and the Challenge of Biblical Criticism. He, his wife and their four children reside in Bet Shemesh.

Recipe for Freedom: Our tradition teaches that Matzah is the bread of affliction baked hastily on the run, but there is reason to believe this is crumby Interpretation. Together we learn how Matzah became the bread of freedom.
Rabbi Charles E. Savenor serves as the Executive Director of Civic Spirit. Founded in 2017, Civic Spirit provides training in civic education to Jewish, Catholic, Christian, and Islamic day schools.
The organization's mission is to educate, inspire, and empower faculty and students towards civic belonging, knowledge, and responsibility. In addition to his work at Civic Spirit, Rabbi Savenor was the co-Executive Producer of "We Are Here - The Songs of the Holocaust" that sold out Carnegie Hall this past January in honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
He currently sits on the international boards of Leket Israel (the National Food Bank of Israel) and Gesher. Charlie and his wife, Julie Walpert, are the parents of two sons, Joseph and Benjamin, both of whom were Rabbi Schwartz's students. Raving fans of the Red Sox and Celtics, they live in New York City.

RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB
- In the Walt Disney film Dumbo, the main character is an elephant who can fly with his enormous ears. He is convinced, however, that he can do so only by means of a magic feather. Once while flying, Dumbo drops the feather, panics, and starts to fall. His friend, a mouse, saves them both by insisting to Dumbo that he could fly by himself without the feather. Dumbo makes a successful effort to fly on his own because he loves his friend. On one Rabbinic interpretation, the Israelites mistakenly feared that Moses's failure to return from the mountain at the expected time meant he was dead or had abandoned them and they began substituting and even worshiping a Golden Calf. Why did they lack confidence in their own relationship with God? Was there a love that might have saved them?
- We, too, have moments when we fear that we have lost the people or beliefs that have led us successfully in our lives. What love might drive us to take risks necessary to rediscover our confidence and ability?

RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB
- For much of our early history, humans believed that communication with, or at least from, the supernatural was possible. The messages received in such ways could teach us, individually and collectively, how to live wisely, morally, politically, and militarily. Few of us believe we have direct access to such transcendent sources today. We tend to use our understanding of logic, mathematics, natural experience, human or even artificial, scientific research, and reasoned argument to decide how to live as persons and as societies. But there are exceptions: the appreciation of beauty in art and nature as well as love in romance and friendship. Hence, clarity and certitude in these areas sometimes seem to come from something, someplace, or even someone beyond us.
- THE URIM AND THE THUMMIM — This was an inscription of the Proper Name of God which was placed between the folds (i. e. the two pieces forming the front and back) of the breast-plate through which it (the breast-plate) made its statements clear (lit., illuminated its words; מאיר from אור, light, this being an allusion to the אורים) and its promises true (מתמם from the root תמם, an allusion to תמים) (Yoma 73b). In the second Temple, there was certainly the breastplate (although other objects employed in the Temple Service were missing), for it was impossible that the High Priest should have lacked a garment, but that Divine Name was not within it. It was on account of the inscription which constituted the Urim and Thummim and which enabled it to give decisions that it was called “judgment”, as it is said (Numbers 27:21) “And he shall enquire for him by the judgment of the Urim” (Numbers 27:21).
- [AND AARON SHALL BEAR] THE JUDGMENT OF THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL — the object by means of which they are judged and admonished whether they should do a particular thing or whether they should not do it. But according to the Midrashic statement (Zevachim 88b) that the breastplate atoned for those who pervert judgment, it was called “judgment” in allusion to the pardon thus given for perverse judgment.
- “Aaron will bear the judgment of the Children of Israel on his heart;” i.e., he will inform G-d of the needs of the Jewish people so that he can give them guidance; we have encountered the term משפט in this sense Deuteronomy 18,3, as well as in Kings I 8,59 in Solomon’s blessing of the people after the consecration of the Temple he had built in Jerusalem.

Dear OZ family,
As we approach the open arms of Shabbat’s peaceful embrace, I ask everyone to please heed the cautionary words of our President’s recent email, to be aware of the professed hatred set aside for tomorrow. We are on a heightened level of vigilance, and the police have informed us that they will also have an enhanced presence in our community. We know very well that hatred can only be displaced by love, and therefore, tomorrow, for our community, will be a day of devotion, chesed, love, peace and tranquility. Why should we wait until tomorrow? Let’s do chesed today! Pick up a pair of gloves at shul to share with someone who is cold, as the temperature is going down into the 20’s tonight. We live our daily lives in a world that seems to be primarily material. We are surrounded by "things," both natural and fabricated. Our understanding, intents, and purposes may, on occasion, provide them with a meaning that transcends nature and human artifice and even their moral role in our lives. This suggests that our interaction with the things of our world, especially with works of art, may open us to a reality that transcends the world's materiality. Even rarer but still possible are those moments in which the realm of the spirit seems to enter our ordinary world and either directly transform its material nature or teach us how to do so. - Just law is a major protector of the basic dignity and worth of human beings, individually and as members of groups. But since actual legal systems govern specific societies, they accord special duties, rights and privileges to citizens that outsiders or even resident non-citizens do not have. In Jewish law, different rights and duties belong to Jews than to resident non-Jews or visitors. Sirely there are universal human rights or protections that any person within the jurisdiction of any legal system ought to be accorded e.g not to be robbed, kidnapped or murdered. Any legal system must require some actions or duties of all residents, whether temporary, long term or permanent e.g.payment of sales taxes, obeying traffic laws, or respecting group symbols like flags or anthems. - In our world of so many different and opposite kinds of things, is there an underlying unity? For the Greeks, maybe water, maybe matter, or maybe mind. Or, for the more mystically inclined, the creative, world-ordering presence of the Divine. In our own lives as well we may ask: Is there any way to bring together our many different wants, goals, drives, interests, theories and perceptions? Is there somehow a "unity", a unifying task, purpose or goal to our existence? Such unity seems to require a conjunction of opposites--different things somehow paradoxically actually being the same. And it is not not very easy for us to see how even the Creator of the world would be able to achieve such a joining of opposites. How is it, then, that we seem to live in one world and in many worlds all at the same time?

RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB
We admire and respect people because of the quality of their actions and intellect. We hold them in high esteem. But that does not automatically translate into offering them societal positions of honor. Much the same is true socially. There are people we see as examples of human moral and even intellectual excellence but with whom we are not really interested in socializing. They are people with whom we share our private concerns and even sometimes seek advice. Still, we are hardly seen together with them publicly. In contrast, some people have celebrity status, which often depends on things other than genuinely admirable qualities. What makes us see someone as a celebrity?
Where do you fit into this picture? How does it make you feel when you are admired? Honored? Treated as a celebrity? Why?

[MOREOVER THE MAN MOSES.] For many let them have what they asked out of respect for Moses.
Ramban
MOREOVER, THE MAN MOSES, who brought the plagues upon them, WAS VERY GREAT IN THE ENTIRE LAND OF EGYPT, IN THE SIGHT OF PHARAOH’S SERVANTS — his opponents — AND IN THE SIGHT OF THE PEOPLE, Israel. .... And some scholars say that the expression, in the sight of the people, means the Egyptians.
The reason Scripture does not state [that Moses was very great] “in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants,” [but instead mentions only Pharaoh’s servants], is that G-d made Pharaoh’s heart obstinate towards Moses because he [Pharaoh] had twice spoken to him improperly, and He desired that Pharaoh come to Moses and bow down to him as one comes before his enemy, all this being a sign of the power and achievement of Moses.
...[Hence we must conclude that the intent of the verse here is to be explained as above, i.e., that the Egyptians bore no grudge against the Israelites because of the plagues.]
