HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB
Kant thought that the maturity of humanity lay in leaving behind an ethic and law that depended on a divine source; being rational, growing up meant freely giving ourselves the law. Forget a divine supernatural revelation, however powerful an experience; instead seek a way of life given by reason, not by awe-inspiring experiences that take your breath away. At the most, for "moderns", revelation can be understood as the emergence of an autonomous humanity governed by reason. Even in the religious philosophy of the middle ages, many important thinkers understood the content of revelation as essentially rational. What we learn from revelation has to seem reasonable These views have been disputed by those for whom spiritual/religious experience plays a key role in how they live. In your own life, is there something that you would call "spiritual/religious experience" that guides how you live? If there is, how does what you learn from such experiences relate to your ethics? to the commitments you make based on your sense of what "rationality" demands of you?
Reflections on the narrative of the revelation on Mt. Sinai found in Exodus.
