HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB
Do you think about people the same way that you think about objects and things? and things? Sometimes we do. Things may serve a purpose; we also hire people because they serve our purposes. People are of intrinsic worth; beautiful objects may also be seen as of inherent value. But there is a difference. Human beings live lives that may have moral and spiritual significance. The things that we make do not act. They have histories, not lives. They may be used for a moral purpose, but they are in and of themselves morally neutral.
One other thing to think about. What about creation? Does nature, with its trees, grass, animals, etc., have intrinsic value because it comes from a divine source? And, if nature-as-creation is inherently sacred, does it have a life? A history?
