We spent Tisha B'av this year in 4 different cities, Giv'atZe'ev, BeitShemesh, Netanya and we ended in Yerushalayim. The Old City is an amazing place for ending Tisha B'av. There were a few thousand people singing kumsitz songs, and the break-fast was extraordinary. Abundant food was distributed throughout the Rova for anyone to take. Dozens of pizza pies, countless boxes of cookies and sleeves of water were given out in the spirit of "Kol dichpin" of the Pesach seder.
As I have often done on past trips, I visited a number of institutions supported by OZ's charity fund. Israel is suffused with kindness and chesed and our charitable contributions are doing great work.
We went with BeitElazraki's kids to Luna Park for amusement, and as another example of "Only in Israel", the public address system interrupted the festive music on a number of occasions to announce minyanim for Mincha and then a Minyan for Ma'ariv just before closing.
Some of the rides were designated for children to ride only if accompanied by a parent. Not an adult, mind you, but a parent.
This was especially galling because the children at BeitElazraki don't live with their parents. So Alisa and I posed as parents to 2 Yemenite boys with peyos. At one ride, the young attendant cast doubt on the relationship. We said, "Would you believe we're their grandparents"? He really refused them entry, until I told him that these kids were living in an orphanage and the rule was discriminatory.
A good portion of the people in the park were Moslems, looking to give their kids a good time, just like the Jews. If only the Middle East could be like Luna Park.
Please keep Israel in your prayers for peace.
Love and regards from Israel,
Rabbi Allen and Alisa Schwartz
