As you may know, we are about to commence the Infrastructure Project to fix our facade and roof, and the Bet Medrash Rehabilitation to make that space elegant and beautiful.
The good news is WE HAVE ALL THE MONEY TO DO IT!
The bad news is that THE MONEY IS IN YOUR POCKET!
This is an enormously worthwhile project. We have done our due diligence, choosing an engineer, picking contractors, hiring an architect etc. We either fix the shul now, or we wait for it to crumble further and cost more to fix. Your move, chief (Good Will Hunting).
Every 30 years or so, this magnificent building requires a significant investment. That's how we are able to enjoy the shul - through the labor and money of those who came before us. Either we do our part, or we don't. Either we live off the labor and money of others, or we live off our own. NOW IS THE TIME TO STAND UP AND BE COUNTED AS A STAKEHOLDER IN THIS SHUL.
Don't just be a guest, visitor or spectator here. Be a member who counts.
We ask that at a minimum, everyone contribute double their usual Yom Kippur appeal contribution for the next five years. If you usually give $1,000, your responsibility is to give an extra $1,000 for the next five years. We are happy to accept monthly contributions.
You know, and I know, that this money (for example, $83 extra a month for those who give $1,000) will not break the bank for the vast majority of you. It's a matter of whether you will do the right thing and pay for these repairs. If we were a co-op, we would assess you. In a co-op, if one refuses, the co-op simply seizes and sells the unit- end of story. But we are not a co-op. We depend on your honor. Doing the right thing is hard -that's why too few do it! But the reward is great - you will rightly feel a heart-warming spark of genuine pride when you contribute to this cause.
I am counting on you! Remember - we are not the government, where many dollars are unfortunately lost to waste or fraud. We will count and treasure every single dollar you give us.
This shul gives you air conditioning, chulent, herring, Torah. Now is the time to give back.
Thanks!
Ari Weitzner

The Fast of Tisha b'Av is observed on Motzei Shabbat and Sunday
There are no food restrictions in the meal before the fast. We may have meat and wine and any number of dishes. We may eat in a large group and bench with a Mezuman. No special symbolically mournful foods need be eaten. The meal should be concluded before sunset, 8:02pm.
There will be an early Mincha at Ohab Zedek at 5:00 PM and 6:30pm to facilitate the timing of this meal.
Shoes to be worn for Tisha B’Av should be prepared before Shabbat. If one forgot to prepare shoes in advance, verbally recite Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L’chol and wear them to shul - Maariv will meet at 8:45pm in the both Main Shul and Bet Medrash.
We recite Ata Chonantanu in Maariv, but we do not make Havdala until after the fast. No work should be done until after Ma’ariv or reciting Hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol. The only part of Havdala recited on Motz’aei Shabbat is Borei M’orei Ha’eish, preferably before Eicha.
If one must eat or partake of a drink other than water or seltzer during the fast, Havdala should be recited first, but Havdala should not be over wine or grape juice. This Havdala begins with Shehakol and skips B’samim.
After the fast we may not eat before Havdala, which begins with borei pri hagafen and skips B’samim and Eish. Ata Chonantanu is not recited in Ma’ariv after the fast. We will say Kiddush Levana on Sunday night.
Restrictions of the nine days usually continue until Chatzot the day after Tisha B’Av. This year, on Monday the only restriction that continues this year is of meat and wine and only until the morning.
As above, if Havdala is usually made on hagefen that custom may be maintained, for Sunday night.
All other nine days restrictions conclude with the fast.
"May we merit to see G-d's return to Zion in compassion..."

Starting June 25th, new CSS Security Classes will be given. These new courses will be given at Lincoln Square Synagogue and will include both theory and physical training. Experience is not required, and women and men are invited to attend. The proven practical security methods and protocols you will learn will greatly increase both your security and the security of the community as a whole. 8 weeks of courses will start with the 2 Week Level 1 Series, followed by the 6 Week Level 2 Series. Experienced members can also use this as a refresher.
Bear in mind, our paid security detail is no substitute for the personal knowledge this training will provide. The more volunteers we have, the less rotations that will be required of us. And remember, all volunteers who successfully complete these courses and regularly rotate will be waived the OZ Annual Security Fee.
Community Security Service (CSS) is a 501(c)3 non-profit Jewish security organization run by dedicated, professional members of the Jewish community. CSS members are highly trained professionals who volunteer to help protect Jewish life and the Jewish way of life in the United States. CSS is apolitical and non-denominational in focus and works hand-in-hand with law enforcement and the organized Jewish community to provide a qualitatively better approach to community security.
The organization proactively protects Jewish synagogues and organizational events. CSS partners with these established organizations, trains each membership base in professional security techniques and oversees operations. Additionally, CSS promotes public awareness about security threats to the American Jewish community.

By popular demand we are introducing a new Friday Night Sephardic Plag Minyan. A plag minyan straddles a time frame that is an hour to 90 minutes before sunset, depending on the time of year. If we daven Mincha before plag, we can daven ma'ariv right after plag. In the summer months, this allows for a much longer Shabbos and a return from shul while the young children may still be awake.
The plag minyan will meet in addition to the 7pm Mincha and the sunset Mincha. Since this minyan depends on sunset, the time it meets will fluctuate with the changing sunset. For the next 6 weeks, that time is 6:45 pm. This minyan will feature a Sephardi nussach and begin at 6:30 pm with Shir Hashirim and Ketoret.
We look forward to your participation
Kol tuv,
Rabbi Allen Schwartz Rabbi Jack Varon

For the past few years our family has represented Congregation Ohab Zedek in the Cheryl Diamond NYC 5k SCHLEP. We do this to honor all the members of our community who have survived breast and ovarian cancer and give hope to all those who are currently undergoing treatment.
This run/walk benefits the BRCA Multidisciplinary Clinic, which serves women at high risk of breast and ovarian cancer, at Israel’s Rabin Medical Center’s Davidoff Cancer Center– a world class facility whose sole purpose is the treatment and prevention of cancer. The NYC 5K SCHLEP also supports research studies investigating breast and ovarian cancer, and BRCA mutation carriers.
We ask you to please consider joining Team Ohab Zedek making a donation so that Rabin Medical Center will be able to continue its valuable research, by clicking HERE .

Last week, just before the last days of Yom Tov, I sent out a reminder of a program called "11 for 11." This was a call for us to invite 11 guests over the year in memory of the 11 kedoshim who were killed in Pittsburgh, perform 11 acts of chesed in their merit, and to remember them at Yizkor. Then the tragic news came right after Yom Tov of the savage attack at the Chabad of Poway that same day.
Let us add the name of Lori Gilbert Kaye, of blessed memory, who heroically protected her rabbi, and rename our program "12 for 12."
Let us also have the names of the three wounded worshippers in mind in our prayers. They are Rav Yisrael ben Chana Priva, Noya bat Eden, and Almog ben Ruti.
At 11:23am Shabbat morning, exactly one week to the moment from the attack we will break in shul for a moment of silence and we will sing Acheinu. There will also be a gathering tomorrow at Chabad of the West Side at 97th and Amsterdam Ave. between 12 noon and 2pm.
Please also consider writing a letter of support to the Goldstein and Kaye families. These letters can be sent c/o Chabad of Poway, 16934 Chabad Way, Poway, CA 92064.
The office arranged for a thorough Security Review this past week. President Ari Weitzner and the Officers of OZ will convene an executive meeting this week to review updating protocal and upgrading systems, and a discussion will continue at the General Membership BBQ Meeting at the end of May.
Our best response to this is to get closer to another Jew. Avoid Lashon Hara, Avoid conflict. The gunman wants us defeated, divided, and weakened. We will be stronger, united, and closer to one another.
Finally, Seudah Shlishit has been anonymously dedicated to Lori Gilbert Kaye, may her memory be a blessing.
Shabbat Shalom,
Rabbi Allen Schwartz

The terror attack in San Diego reinforces the same basic themes.
Firstly, we are very, very safe. These kinds of attacks are the exceptions that prove the rule. The odds of getting attacked are still one in a million.
Second, terrorists pick easy targets. They do reconnaissance and plan ahead. A shul that has a visible presence outside, of professional-looking people keeping an eye on things, is exactly the kind of shul a would-be terrorist would prefer to avoid.
That being said ... WE STILL NEED MORE VOLUNTEERS!
I implore you to please sign up - we are talking about the safety of you, your friends, and your loved ones. Please note - all volunteers will be waived the Security Fee. Email css@ozny.org for more information.
Again - please give serious thought to signing up for CSS. Now is the time. (For you singles- being on CSS is a great way to mingle with other singles!) Email to CSS@ozny.org.
At the Spring Membership Meeting at the end of May, we will discuss upgrades to our security equipment infrastructure and updates to our security protocol.

The news of the last few days requires our attention.
The New York Times Anti-Semitic cartoon that appeared this week is a cruel reminder of the lies told about us in Der Strumer in Germany in the early 1930’s. The gas chambers and crematoria in Europe did not exist in a vacuum in the 1940’s. They were prepared for years with the lies of the 1930’s.
The apologies of the Times are disingenuous. This cartoon had to be seen by many editors in order to make it to the screen. Only a full evaluation and change of policy at the Times can make up for decades of distorted reporting on Israel. Who is to know if this despicable caricature influenced the murderer this past week at the Chabad center in Poway, Calif. The New York Times shamefully hid all reporting of the Holocaust to the back pages during World War II.
I call this to your attention just days before Yom Hashoa, when we have heightened sensitivity about these issues.
Please note the below information about a rally and demonstration to be held today at 5:30pm in front of the NYT building at 41st St. and 8th Ave.
Spread the word.

PROTEST AT NEW YORK TIMES AGAINST ANTI-SEMITIC CARTOON - Demonstrators To Call For Firing Of People Responsible
A number of Jewish organizations will hold a protest on Monday, April 29 at 5:30 PM at The New York Times, located at 620 Eighth Avenue (41 Street) against the Anti-Semitic cartoon which was recently published in the newspaper.
Protestors will gather to express outrage about the newspaper publishing an anti-Semitic cartoon depicting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a dog on a leash held by a blind President Donald Trump wearing a skullcap.
Protestors will gather and call for the firing of editors and individuals responsible for this publication.
The Coalition for Jewish Concerns, Americans for a Safe Israel (AFSI), and a coalition of other organizations are organizing.
Those gathered will also pray for the victims of the San Diego synagogue shooting.
As we prepare for the last days of Yom Tov and Yizkor, I'd like to remind of an initiative I wrote about earlier in the year. We always react to tragedy by turning, to the best of our ability, every setback into something positive and every stumbling block into a stepping stone. We as a community are committed to remember the tragedy of the 11 Jews in Pittsburgh who were murdered in Shul on Shabbos morning. Our brothers and sisters around the world sought many ways to memorialize them. I am asking again that everyone join in a program called "11 for 11" - meaning we invite one person to our tables corresponding to each person that was lost. Alternatively, we should take upon ourselves to perform one act of kindness corresponding to each victim.
Please contact me if you would like to take part in this exceptional way to remember our dear departed at Yizkor this week.

In the wake of the recent news of measles outbreaks in the New York area, I remind our community of the unequivocal position of today’s rabbinic authorities who insist that children receive the full regimen of vaccinations to protect from life-threatening outbreaks of preventable diseases.
In matters concerning such serious issues of public health, we ask that everyone demonstrate the proper consideration for the well-being of the community.
If anyone has any questions on this matter, please call me directly at the shul office.
Wishing you all a peaceful and pleasant Shabbat,

I am inviting our entire community to join in a 2 week program that will coincide with the reading of Parshat Tazria and Metzora. These Torah portions are dedicated largely to the malady of tzara’at, considered by our sages to be the consequence of slander. Slander reveals what should be concealed, so the consequence is a skin disorder, which appears anywhere, even in places that are normally concealed. The program is called “Lashon Hara Out” and it asks everyone to avoid speaking or hearing lashon hara on Shabbat Parshat Tazria, (Apr.5-6) and Shabbat Parshat Metzora, (Apr.12-13). It’s very simple. If we hear or begin speaking lashon hara, we remember our participation in the “Lashon Hara Out” and we change the subject. Hopefully, by the 3rd week, we will grow accustomed to banishing slander from our midst altogether. The Talmud teaches that slander drives away the Divine Presence. In these turbulent times, we need the protection of that presence in our midst. Let’s do our part. Remember, Great people talk about ideas, Middle-of-the-road people talk about things and little people talk about other people. Let’s not belittle anyone.
Wishing you all a peaceful and pleasant Shabbat,
Rabbi Allen Schwartz
