Guest Dvar Torah by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Hashkama Minyan

The Parasha first deals with the mitsvah of offering the olah sacrifice, one that is completely burned on the altar and not eaten. 

The word used is "Tsav." 

This is the Chabad translation of the first Rashi: The expression צַו always denotes urging [to promptly and meticulously fulfill a particular commandment] for the present and also for future generations. Rabbi Simeon taught: Scripture especially needs to urge [people to fulfill commandments,] where monetary loss is involved. — [Torath Kohanim 6:1]

I add: The Kotzker Rebbe suggested that the special urging is necessary because as soon as something is required [commanded] by a source outside ourselves we find ourselves less inclined to do it, even resisting doing it. 
 
With the exception of of moments of crisis, most of the time we think we know what we should do. And, however we came to this knowledge,  we see it as something to which  we ourselves have personally committed ourselves and feel like doing. But there are actions we do not really feel like doing , yet we see doing them as obligations and requirements that come from a source other than personal inclination---reason, tradition, community, etc. We have to make a special effort to "urge" ourselves to do these good things. They have a "cost"--sometimes in money, or in time, and sometimes there is a felt "cost" to our sense of simply being able to do what we personally feel like doing. We need to ask ourselves: What are the areas in my life where I think I need to make a special effort, a special "urging" to make sure that I overcome whatever is getting in the way of my  doing what I should ?  Will I make that special effort?

I was thinking of the cliche that one typically misses something only when it's gone. I hate that cliche (who knows what movie that comes from?? hint- the director is Jewish), but it's true, isn't it? 

Too often my mind wanders when I daven, and sometimes...I'm not even too crazy about showing up. But now? Darn! I would love to go to shul and sing Friday night and see my pew pals. Sigh...

I now sometimes fantasize how incredible it's gonna be the first Shabbos when we get back to shul! Our voices will roar! Our davening will be better than ever! We will soak up Rabbi Schwartz's Torah, read Len's Parsha Picks, enjoy the herring, chulent and booze. We'll never take any of that for granted ever again. Right? Of course I'm right.

So as we go stir crazy and go further into debt...remember that this will end...soon...we will get back to work and pay off that debt...and we will always have OZ as our sanctuary, and source of comfort and help. If you need confidential assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Rabbi at ras@ozny.org. 

May Hashem give nechama to those who lost loved ones to this virus. We cannot be with you physically, but we are with you.

Midrash commentary understands the opening of Parashat VaYikra as teaching us:

1. The Divine Voice spoke only to Moses in this case, and 12 others - although it sometimes spoke both to Moshe and Aaron.

2. The Divine Voice stopped at the edge of the Tent of Meeting.

3. There were periods of silence [pauses] during which Moses was to contemplate what he had heard, and if this was necessary for Moses, it is even more so for others. 

While we are not Moses for the People of Israel, I think that we can still learn something important for ourselves from these comments. 

We sometimes have moments of profound insight. These moments often seem to have a sense of profound focus upon us alone. Whatever "voice" is speaking to us , is speaking to us, exactly in the place where we are now. Often this moment and this place have, or come to have, a kind of special, sacred meaning for us. The meaning and implications of these focused insight experiences, however, need to be contemplated and unpacked. How do we now understand our world differently? How do we now understand people differently? What implications does our insight have for our obligations and responsibilities?

As we approached Rosh Chodesh it was literally painful to think that our shul like those all over the country and the world would not be filled with leining and Hallel. The magnificent shul which we call home would be dark and silent. No one would open aron kodesh. No one would ascend the bima. Siddurim and chumashim are arranged on shelves in neat rows but no one would be there to open them. 

For many of us during the year we might find 1000 excuses to miss davening with a minyan. What would any one of us give to be able to even daven a "quick" Mincha now and be able to hear our fellow mispallim answer along to Kedusha or Kaddish?

Every morning from Simchas Torah onward I think about Pesach. 

In my closet are three very dry lulavim in their cases. Each year I preserve them in order to use in burning the chometz. 

They remind me now of Hallel. The last time they were used the walls of OZ reverberated with our tefillot as we took the arba minim in hand. 

Permit me for a minute to elaborate on the waving of these arba minim and how it relates to our current situation and OZ.

We take them when we praise Hashem, we take them when we ask for salvation and there are some among us who are careful to take them first thing in the morning at the earliest opportunity. 

That's the way we often are motivated to come to shul.

"Hodo....Ki Tov" - there's a bar mitzvah. There's a bris...there's a kiddush. We come excited to celebrate and share good times.

"Ana Hashem....Hosheah Na" - we come to shul to beg and implore Hashem to help us or someone we know thru a difficult time. We come to say a mishaberach or say tehillim because times are not so good.

Then there are some people who wake up and shake the lulav because they don't want to wait until Hallel. We know those people who come to OZ like clockwork without any ulterior motives or agenda.

Whatever the reason people have for connecting with Hashem there's one common factor and that is each of them seeks a relationship with Hashem and they all come to OZ as THE place to do it. 

I'm not asking for money. All I ask is that in this time when we are unable to be togther in that makom we all love so much to take stock and think about what you wouldn't do to be able to return speedily and in good health. THEN I want all us us to try and hold onto that longing and desire for as long as we possibly can and enhance our davening by coming as much as possible. Take advantage of our programs. Volunteer to teach, lein, daven and guard our shul. Get involved. 

We will all be togther soon (IYH) and we will again have many reasons to come early and stay late in that space that is like a second home to us all. Let's recommit ourselves during this uneasy time that when we are able to return we bring as much energy, love and enthusiasm as we would do if we were able to be together tonight or tomorrow morning.

Dear Community Members,

We, the undersigned Rabbis, are sharing with you the following guidelines that we believe are of the utmost importance. As this current crisis grows in scope each and every day, we believe that it is crucial that all of us commit to doing all that we can to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in both our community and in New York City at large. These guidelines are being made in consultation with preeminent medical professionals and are consistent with what numerous other neighboring communities have taken upon themselves as well. With heartfelt Tefillah, we pray that this plague should end soon and we look forward to being together once again in our Shuls and communal institutions.

Minyanim outside of the Synagogue/House minyanim
Our members should not convene or attend minyanim in their homes, or in common spaces in their buildings. Davening should be done exclusively alone in our own homes.

Mourners/Yahrtzeit
Anyone who is a Mourner or who is observing a Yahrtzeit should not seek out a minyan to recite Kaddish.
In observance of a Yahrtzeit one should light a candle, recite a Kel Maleh Rachamim, say Tehillim 16 and learn Mishnayot in memory of their loved one.

Shabbat/Simcha Preparations
As social distancing continues, we should plan to have our Shabbat meals alone with our families. We should not be inviting guests.
Smachot, when necessary, should be limited to the minimum number of guests following these guidelines:
o Shalom Zachor: Shalom Zachor should not take place at all.
o Bris: A Bris should be made in the house with only the immediate family living in that house present. Additional guests should not be invited to the Bris. If desired, technology can be used for others to join virtually.
o Weddings should be limited to the immediate family of the bride and groom, with additional people to comprise an exact Minyan if needed, two acceptable witnesses, and one Rabbi to be Mesader Kiddushin. The Kiddushin should be done outdoors, weather permitting, and a festive meal can be made at a later point in time. We recommend that elderly grandparents should not be at the wedding.
o Sheva Brachot: Sheva Brachot should not be taking place at all.
o Naming Girls: Girls may be named privately; please reach out to your Rabbi for the nusach that should be used to do this properly. After naming a girl, the baby’s name should be publicized using electronic communications.
o Bar/Bat Mitzvah: Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations should not take place at this point. For a Bar Mitzvah boy who prepared for a whole year there are a couple of options dependent on each Rabbi. There may be options for making up the Kriat HaTorah at a future date when the epidemic passes and for making a celebratory party then as well.
o Funerals: Funerals should only be graveside with only immediate family and an exact Minyan. If the family does not comprise a minyan, please contact your Rabbi to help facilitate a minyan at the graveside.
o Shiva: Shiva visits should be made by phone and video and should not be made in person.

Please note: Even when family members are included, elderly individuals and those who are most vulnerable should not be present as part of the Minyan or Simcha.

Clearly these are unprecedented times. Let us take every opportunity to increase our Tefillot, intensify our study of Torah and find safe ways to be supportive to others. Hillel teaches (Pirkei Avot 1:13) “Im Lo Achshav Ematai?-If not now, then when?” In the merit of our genuine commitment to protect ourselves and our families both physically and spiritually, may we merit to Yeshuot VeNechamot, God’s salvation and consolation

Dear OZ family,

Yesterday I read a prediction made by a well known commentator that the Coronavirus will cause a breakdown in civil society. I prefer what I read in the NY Sun, in a piece by Ira Stoll, who predicts an amazing outbreak of compassion in the coming days and weeks. From the calls and emails I’m receiving from the people so many of you have called and helped, we have already seen this more rosy prediction. Many older New Yorkers recall the last two major power outages in our city. They both occurred in the swelter of summer, and had a sharp contrast. In 1977 there was widespread looting and general mayhem. In 2004, there were countless acts of compassion all over the city, and incredibly selfless acts of chesed all around. We became a different city in between and I believe we are still that same city.

We must be pro-active in finding ways to be helpful for those in need. Please keep calling the elders you were assigned to contact. I don’t have an engagement to announce in our community but we can all join a recent YU Connects couple, Chavi Kelemer and Andrew Davidsburg in our wishes for Mazel tov. On a sadder note, we extend nechama to Sylvia Lefkowitz on the passing of her husband, Martin. I have visited them over the years. Sylvia’s # is 646-382-4567.

The Mishna Berura and Rav Moshe Feinstein agree that it is preferable to daven Shacharis alone at vasikin than to daven with a minyan before or after. Vasikin means we reach the amida at sunrise (netz), which is now just about 7am. Of course that time gets earlier day by day. Click HERE for daily OZ Zmanim.

Dear OZ family,

Another day.

The overriding message is “Be safe”. Safe practice is, according to Jewish law, more important than ritual practice. This is known as ”Chamira Sakanta M’Issura” and although, for many, a bitter pill to swallow, is the order of the day. My father told me that the power driving him to survival during the Holocaust, was not only to tell his story, but also to name children after his murdered family, and to say Kaddish for them. My older brother and sister bear the names of his parents, and I and my younger sister, two of his siblings, and the next three generations, which he lived to see, cover every sibling of his. It is hard to fathom that I would willingly forego Kaddish, but that is what “Chamira Sakanta M’Issura” means. Shuls are closed but hearts are open. Needs will grow in the coming days and weeks. If you were assigned names to call, please keep calling them. People will have uprooted Yom Tov plans and Seder plans, and we’ll work on that, hopefully in a better time. Meanwhile, Let us join in wishing Mazel Tov to Nicole and Brett Gartenberg, who were blessed with a baby girl, Sara Feiga, as well as to Helen and Harry Gross who were blessed with a great-grandson, born to their grandchildren Jonah and Deena. Tonight was supposed to be our shul annual dinner. This too shall pass. Be safe.

We will shortly have Mechiras Chametz forms on line. We normally solidify the transaction with a kinyan, that must be made in person. However, this year, given the constraints of the day, forms filled out on line will suffice. Look for them soon.

Also, tomorrow night at 8pm, join me on zoom.us for a class on the Laws of Pesach (details on separate email). This week we’ll discuss the preparations regarding chametz, and next week we’ll discuss the preparations for the Seder. After that we will have classes on the Haggadah.

This is a good time for binge learning, but above all, be safe.

Shalom OZ Family,
 
Like other New York Area Shuls, we operate with local health officials and prominent Poskim to guide us through this difficult period.
 
Their guidance has now changed and based on their recommendation, we will cease building and service operation through the weekend and update you as conditions change.
 
One of the great characteristics of Orthodox Jews is quite a deficiency at this time. We are in close quarters for so many reasons, ranging from Minyanim to shiurim to frequent Simchas, and more. This puts us at a greater risk, and based on reports that we are told are about to be publicized, we are taking this step.
 
Today, we will have a 5:30pm Mincha in the Main Sanctuary and the building will remain open until 6pm to allow the retrieval of personal items.
 
Please make Shabbos 5 minutes early today and recite Tehillim 91 and 142. Use the private time to connect to Hashem. Public prayer definitely adds to our prayer experience. Yet we also have the capacity to create a profoundly meaningful private experience with the Divine. Let us seek such an experience in the coming days. 
 
At no point throughout this ordeal was the concern for public health taken lightly by any of the Rabbis, Leadership, and Staff of this shul. I am proud of our efforts to maintain daily minyan while maintaining the highest sanitary standards recommended by the CDC and local authorities.
 
Cancelling group Tefillah is a serious decision. Those of us saying Kaddish and observing Yarzheit are particularly impacted, Though we cannot daven together physically, I encourage all of us to daven at the same time when minyanim are scheduled.
 
Let us not panic.
 
Let us use this opportunity for introspection and growth. 
 
Let us use this time to enhance our own acts of Chesed and Torah. As of now, the elderly of our community are covered for their needs, but if that changes, we will need volunteers to assist them. If you are able to do this please call me at 212 865-3325. Also, this would be an excellent time to catch up on the daf, the parsha, Tanach Yomi and other learning. There are 10’s of thousands of shiurim on the YU and OU websites. I have over 1,500 on yutorah.org
 
May Hashem heal us and guide us through this time. 
 
We will be stronger and better when this is over.

Dr. Nechumi Yaffe is a David Hartman Center Fellow and a post-doctoral research fellow at Princeton University affiliated with the Daniel Kahneman Center of Behavioral Science and Public Policy and the University Center for Human Values. She earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Nechumi’s research examines, from a social psychology perspective, how identity, social norms, and authority play a role in creating and preserving poverty and focuses on the ultra-orthodox (Haredi) community in Israel, a population currently understudied. Before entering her doctoral program, she was an advisor for the Haredi educational system where she devised the new curriculum in history and wrote the textbook now used by all Israeli Haredi high schools. In 2019 she became the first woman from Israel’s ultra-orthodox community to join the faculty at Tel Aviv University.
