Dear OZ family,
Another day.
The overriding message is “Be safe”. Safe practice is, according to Jewish law, more important than ritual practice. This is known as ”Chamira Sakanta M’Issura” and although, for many, a bitter pill to swallow, is the order of the day. My father told me that the power driving him to survival during the Holocaust, was not only to tell his story, but also to name children after his murdered family, and to say Kaddish for them. My older brother and sister bear the names of his parents, and I and my younger sister, two of his siblings, and the next three generations, which he lived to see, cover every sibling of his. It is hard to fathom that I would willingly forego Kaddish, but that is what “Chamira Sakanta M’Issura” means. Shuls are closed but hearts are open. Needs will grow in the coming days and weeks. If you were assigned names to call, please keep calling them. People will have uprooted Yom Tov plans and Seder plans, and we’ll work on that, hopefully in a better time. Meanwhile, Let us join in wishing Mazel Tov to Nicole and Brett Gartenberg, who were blessed with a baby girl, Sara Feiga, as well as to Helen and Harry Gross who were blessed with a great-grandson, born to their grandchildren Jonah and Deena. Tonight was supposed to be our shul annual dinner. This too shall pass. Be safe.
We will shortly have Mechiras Chametz forms on line. We normally solidify the transaction with a kinyan, that must be made in person. However, this year, given the constraints of the day, forms filled out on line will suffice. Look for them soon.
Also, tomorrow night at 8pm, join me on zoom.us for a class on the Laws of Pesach (details on separate email). This week we’ll discuss the preparations regarding chametz, and next week we’ll discuss the preparations for the Seder. After that we will have classes on the Haggadah.
This is a good time for binge learning, but above all, be safe.
Rabbi Allen Schwartz

Shalom Friends,
Please note the following from the West Side Mikvah
In order to stagger our schedule and more easily facilitate social distancing guidelines we are implementing the following:
Beginning on Tuesday March 17, the West Side Mikvah will move to appointment ONLY. Please call the Mikvah at 212-579-2011 to make an appointment.
All women will be accommodated.
Please consult your Rabbi (ras@ozny.org) should you have any questions concerning your preparations and immersion.
We request that if you are unwell in any way, in quarantine, have recently traveled to an impacted area, or have been exposed to anyone with a positive COVID-19 test please do not come to the mikvah!
The Mikvah room can only accommodate community members one at a time. When the mikvah room is vacant you will be buzzed in. Please be patient and plan ahead.
In order to properly prepare for Pesach, beginning on Tuesday March 17, the Keilim Mikvah will be open from 9am-2pm.
The West Side Mikvah prioritizes community members. At this time and we request that if you live closer to another mikvah, please use it.
With Hashem’s help we should all stay healthy so that we merit many more mitzvot!
Best wishes,
Ilana Prager
Shoshana Schwartz

Please note, at the guidance of health professionals and prominent poskim, our Shul, like many others in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, remains currently closed for Minyan & Classes to enforce Social Distancing to confront the spread of the Corona Virus.
We have arranged that Sunday morning (March 15) the Shul will be open from 9am to 1pm for the retrieval of personal items you may have left (Tallis, Tefillin, Etc...).
Another notice will go out about online class information.
If you need another time for retrieval, please contact me.

Shalom OZ Family,
Like other New York Area Shuls, we operate with local health officials and prominent Poskim to guide us through this difficult period.
Their guidance has now changed and based on their recommendation, we will cease building and service operation through the weekend and update you as conditions change.
One of the great characteristics of Orthodox Jews is quite a deficiency at this time. We are in close quarters for so many reasons, ranging from Minyanim to shiurim to frequent Simchas, and more. This puts us at a greater risk, and based on reports that we are told are about to be publicized, we are taking this step.
Today, we will have a 5:30pm Mincha in the Main Sanctuary and the building will remain open until 6pm to allow the retrieval of personal items.
Please make Shabbos 5 minutes early today and recite Tehillim 91 and 142. Use the private time to connect to Hashem. Public prayer definitely adds to our prayer experience. Yet we also have the capacity to create a profoundly meaningful private experience with the Divine. Let us seek such an experience in the coming days.
At no point throughout this ordeal was the concern for public health taken lightly by any of the Rabbis, Leadership, and Staff of this shul. I am proud of our efforts to maintain daily minyan while maintaining the highest sanitary standards recommended by the CDC and local authorities.
Cancelling group Tefillah is a serious decision. Those of us saying Kaddish and observing Yarzheit are particularly impacted, Though we cannot daven together physically, I encourage all of us to daven at the same time when minyanim are scheduled.
Let us not panic.
Let us use this opportunity for introspection and growth.
Let us use this time to enhance our own acts of Chesed and Torah. As of now, the elderly of our community are covered for their needs, but if that changes, we will need volunteers to assist them. If you are able to do this please call me at 212 865-3325. Also, this would be an excellent time to catch up on the daf, the parsha, Tanach Yomi and other learning. There are 10’s of thousands of shiurim on the YU and OU websites. I have over 1,500 on yutorah.org
May Hashem heal us and guide us through this time.
We will be stronger and better when this is over.
Kol Tuv,
Rabbi Allen Schwartz

UPDATE
Dear OZ family,
We stress the last word on this greeting because we are all indeed a family. Members of even tight-knit families sometimes disagree and especially when the disagreement involves so serious a challenge as the one we face today, we take it very seriously.
Regarding the Corona-Virus, we are precisely following the protocols set up for our area. The Public Schools continue to remain open, and the subways continue to run a block both East and west of OZ. Although there other other area synagogues that have decided to close for Shabbos, our doors will remain open. We don’t see a reason to close the shul while teeming activity continues unabated all around us. If, Chas V’shalom, the city orders a cessation of activity from Public Schools, subways and religious institutions, we will immediately follow suit. In the meantime, the shul will remain open for minyanim only.
Let us all continue to apply common sense and scrupulous attention to the guidelines we see everywhere about defeating this virus. No food will be served during this time and all shiurim will be cancelled or moved online. If you do not feel even slightly well - do not come to shul. All activity will be limited to tefilla, of which we are in need in abundance.

NYC Guidance for People Who May Have an Increased Risk for Severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
About Novel Coronavirus
What is a novel coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that are common throughout the world. They cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious illnesses like pneumonia. A novel coronavirus is a type of coronavirus that has not been previously seen in humans. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID19) has been detected in thousands of people worldwide.
How serious is this virus and what are the range of symptoms?
Most people with COVID-19 will have mild symptoms. Symptoms can include fever, cough or shortness of breath.
Who is at higher risk for severe illness?
People who are older or may have underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, appear to have a higher risk of severe COVID-19. Children and young adults appear to be less affected.
What You Need to Know to Stay Healthy
What steps can I take to avoid getting COVID-19?
If you think you may have an increased risk for severe COVID-19, take the following steps to prepare and prevent getting infected:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve, not with your hands.
- Do not touch your face with unwashed hands.
- Stop shaking hands when you greet someone. Consider only using an elbow bump when greeting someone.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or disinfecting wipes.
- Encourage your household members and care providers to follow these healthy hygiene tips.
- Avoid nonessential travel to affected areas. Visit cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers for the latest travel health notices.
- Make a list of medications you take regularly. Ask your health care provider if you can have a 90-day supply of all necessary medications.
- If you require home care, ask your provider about plans for what will be done if a COVID-19 outbreak occurs in your community. Plans should include how to provide care without interruptions.
- Ask your provider if you should have influenza or pneumococcal vaccines.
- If your primary doctor has an online “patient portal,” become familiar with using it, in case the practice is very busy during an outbreak.
- Create an emergency contact list.
- Identify people or social groups who can assist if you need extra help.
- Consider stocking up on extra food and important household supplies.
- Take steps to prevent social isolation, in case physical travel is restricted during an outbreak. Consider connecting with others using video chat applications like Skype or FaceTime.
What should I do if I become ill while COVID-19 is in my community?
- Call your regular health care provider for guidance. Do not go to a clinic or hospital without calling ahead. New York City residents without a healthcare provider or insurance can call NYC Health + Hospitals at 844-NYC-4NYC.
- Seek medical attention promptly if your illness is worsening (e.g., you develop difficulty breathing). You should still call ahead, so that providers may prepare for your arrival.
Helpful Resources
- If you are being harassed due to your race, nation of origin or other identities, you can report discrimination or harassment to the NYC Commission on Human Rights by calling 311.
- If you are experiencing stress or feel anxious, contact NYC Well at 888-NYC-WELL (888-692-9355) or text WELL to 65173. NYC Well is a confidential help line that is staffed 24/7 by trained counselors who can provide brief supportive therapy, crisis counseling, and connections to behavioral health treatment, in more than 200 languages.
- If you need help with other support services, contact the NYC Department for the Aging’s Aging Connect at 212-AGING-NYC or 212-244-6469 to speak with an aging specialist.

SHABBAT, JAN. 10-11, 2019
Ohab Zedek Scholar in Residence Weekend
Dr. Nechumi Yaffe is a David Hartman Center Fellow and a post-doctoral research fellow at Princeton University affiliated with the Daniel Kahneman Center of Behavioral Science and Public Policy and the University Center for Human Values. She earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Nechumi’s research examines, from a social psychology perspective, how identity, social norms, and authority play a role in creating and preserving poverty and focuses on the ultra-orthodox (Haredi) community in Israel, a population currently understudied. Before entering her doctoral program, she was an advisor for the Haredi educational system where she devised the new curriculum in history and wrote the textbook now used by all Israeli Haredi high schools. In 2019 she became the first woman from Israel’s ultra-orthodox community to join the faculty at Tel Aviv University.

FROM THE RABBI'S DESK
Dear OZ family,
The reports of Anti-Semitism locally and through the world is beyond alarming. It is incomprehensible that in living memory of the Holocaust that we would see the constant targeting of Jews from the fringes of both the right and the left, and it is devastating to hear the reactions to all of this from Survivors. Updated news about the attack in Jersey City is extremely unnerving. Jews bring renewed prosperity and rejuvenation to a community and are reviled by their neighbors. History does repeat itself.
Please pray for the families of Moshe Hersch Deutsch and Leah Mindel Ferencz who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Our resolve must always be strengthened to enhance our own Ahavas Yisroel and answer hate with a resolute determination to defeat the bad guys and an unwavering commitment to love and support each other.
Rabbi Allen Schwartz
