We just shuttled between Beit Shemesh and Giv'at Ze'ev, and we have been the beneficiaries of the recent opening of new highways between the two neighborhoods. Most of a new highway has been expanded from one lane to three or four, except for one area about half a mile in length. For another "Only in Israel" example, the Antiquities Dept. has not allowed the expansion of highway to include this area, because an ancient city has been found that appears to be from the First Temple period.
The activities of Beit Elazraki, where we stayed, is nothing short of miraculous. I saw plaques of many OZ families who have connected to this great institution. The protection of the most vulnerable is the greatest mitzvah and the children of Beit Elazraki are suffused with confidence, attention, hope, and anticipation for a better day. At the graduation ceremony 13 seniors were recognized and one child from 9 different age groups was decorated. These 22 students were beaming with pride and appreciation for the better life offered to them. This is a great place to visit. Anyone who does would take great pride in klal yisrael.
We'll be back for next Shabbos, the 30th anniversary of our 1st Shabbos at OZ.
Shabbat Shalom and best regards from Israel,
Rabbi Allen and Alisa Schwartz

We spent Tisha B'av this year in 4 different cities, Giv'atZe'ev, BeitShemesh, Netanya and we ended in Yerushalayim. The Old City is an amazing place for ending Tisha B'av. There were a few thousand people singing kumsitz songs, and the break-fast was extraordinary. Abundant food was distributed throughout the Rova for anyone to take. Dozens of pizza pies, countless boxes of cookies and sleeves of water were given out in the spirit of "Kol dichpin" of the Pesach seder.
As I have often done on past trips, I visited a number of institutions supported by OZ's charity fund. Israel is suffused with kindness and chesed and our charitable contributions are doing great work.
We went with BeitElazraki's kids to Luna Park for amusement, and as another example of "Only in Israel", the public address system interrupted the festive music on a number of occasions to announce minyanim for Mincha and then a Minyan for Ma'ariv just before closing.
Some of the rides were designated for children to ride only if accompanied by a parent. Not an adult, mind you, but a parent.
This was especially galling because the children at BeitElazraki don't live with their parents. So Alisa and I posed as parents to 2 Yemenite boys with peyos. At one ride, the young attendant cast doubt on the relationship. We said, "Would you believe we're their grandparents"? He really refused them entry, until I told him that these kids were living in an orphanage and the rule was discriminatory.
A good portion of the people in the park were Moslems, looking to give their kids a good time, just like the Jews. If only the Middle East could be like Luna Park.
Please keep Israel in your prayers for peace.
Love and regards from Israel,
Rabbi Allen and Alisa Schwartz

We saw lots of OZ people, current and former, at a yahrzeit shiur a Alan Nussbaum's apt. in Yerushalayim and they all send warm regards.
Despite the way the news is reported in the US and the EU, the country is calm and daily life hums along. You won't hear much in the media about any provocation against Israel, only Israel's measured response, which is always reported in an exaggerated manner. It's frustrating here , but I tell you first hand, that Israel does seem to be achieving some degree of what they call "Normaliyut". Even the Gaza border is settling down. I see beautiful signs of coexistence of broad swatches of Jews in Netanya. The town square, which is a veritable hot-spot of boisterous activity every night is rather quiet, as Tisha B'av approaches. The Mayor of Netanya is a Beis Ya'acov graduate.and the beaches somehow find room for every type of Jew. Public bathrooms have washing cups and Asher Yatzar signs outside the door. Emergency rooms on Saturday night and Sunday this week have cups and juice ready for people who wish to make Havdala if they have to break the fast. Only in Israel.
Please join me in thanking Rabbi Eliyahu Teitz, Rabbi Jack Verrone, David Israel and Yoni Zolty, together with all the regular shiur instructors, for ably pitching in the next few weeks at OZ.
I wish everyone an easy and meaningful fast.

Shabbat afternoon - Mincha at 5:00pm, no Seudah Shlishit in Shul
TISHA B'AV - SATURDAY NIGHT NOTES
There are no food restrictions in the meal before the fast. We may have meat and wine and any number of dishes. We may eat in a large group and bench with a Mezuman. No special symbolically mournful foods need be eaten. The meal should be concluded before sunset, which is at 8:21 PM.
There will be an early Mincha at Ohab Zedek at 5:00 PM to facilitate the timing of this meal. Ma’ariv will begin at 9:10 PM.
Shoes to be worn for Tisha B’Av should be prepared before Shabbat. If one forgot to prepare shoes in advance, verbally recite Hamavdil Bein Kodesh L’chol at 9:00 PM and wear them to shul.
We recite Ata Chonantanu in Maariv, but we do not make Havdala until after the fast. No work should be done until after Ma’ariv or reciting Hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol. The only part of Havdala recited on Motz’aei Shabbat is Borei M’orei Ha’eish, preferably before Eicha.
If one must eat or partake of a drink other than water or seltzer during the fast, Havdala should be recited first, but Havdala should not be over wine or grape juice. This Havdala begins with Shehakol and skips B’samim.
After the fast we may not eat before Havdala, which begins with borei pri hagafen and skips B’samim and Eish. Ata Chonantanu is not recited in Ma’ariv after the fast. We will say Kiddush Levana on Sunday night.
Restrictions of the nine days usually continue until 1:02 PM the day after Tisha B’Av. The only restriction that continues this year is of meat and wine and only until the morning. As above, if Havdala is usually made on hagefen that custom may be maintained, for Sunday night. All other nine days restrictions conclude with the fast.

On this Independence Day weekend, let us remember the debt of gratitude we as a people owe to the United States of America.
After centuries of exile, Crusades, expulsions, Inquisitions, and persecutions,we have found a refuge in this country unlike any other in our history, in the Diaspora.
Some of her current border problems should not overshadow the fact that people all over the world would do anything and take any risk to live here.
Let us not take this privilege for granted and continue to pray for the peace of this great country.

Important Message from Rabbi Schwartz
Shalom friends,
This past week, Barnard University students voted in favor of a referrendum encouraging its Board and Administration to divest from several companies that do business with Israel.
As strong advocates of Israel, we are unequivocally against the BDS movement.
We strongly urge all Barnard alumni to sign the petition (link below) urging Barnard's President and Board to reject this referrendum.

Kol tuv,
Rabbi Allen Schwartz
Shabbat Shemirat HaLashon
The verse read this Shabbat in Vayikra 19:16 – “Lo telech rachil b’ameicha” “...Do not go out as a talebearer among your people…” is the central Mitzvah of Shemirat HaLashon
The Shabbos Table Machshom L’Fi unites participants in an effort to avoid Loshon Hora and Ona’as Devarim during the Shabbos meal — freeing everyone to enjoy the uplifting atmosphere created by conversation that is positive and life-enhancing.
A Machsom L’fi is a program in which people commit themselves to focusing for a set period of time each day on the proper use of their power of speech as defined in the Torah. During that time, they concentrate on avoiding speaking and hearing loshon hora, gossip, slander, ona’as devarim (hurtful words), or any other form of angry or negative expression. Often, a Machsom L’fi is undertaken as a zechus for someone who is in need of refuah, a shidduch, children, parnassah or a personal yeshuah.
With the Shabbos Table Machsom L'fi, we hold the power to combine these two vibrant streams of brachah each week by joining with Jews across the globe who are making a focused effort to bring the Torah's spirit of positive speech to their Shabbos table.
When you exercise this particular “spiritual muscle” at your meals, building control over your speech, you enhance your ability to keep the mitzvah throughout the week. The reason it is done as a merit for someone in need is because when we act compassionately by avoiding and rejecting loshon hora, Hashem responds to our compassion measure for measure, showering His compassion upon us and our loved ones.
Shmiras Haloshon is a great protection for us and our community, as it states in Mishlei (21:23), "One who guards his mouth and tongue … guards his soul from troubles."
