There is more than one way to approach the question, "What makes us human?". We can see ourselves biologically, psychologically, economically, sociologically, intellectually, ethically, spiritually, etc. Most of us are continually aware of more than one of them in our daily lives. We live simultaneously as physical beings with desires, fears, tasks, and hopes, as well as group membership, beliefs about the world, and how to live well in it. These views sometimes cooperate and sometimes conflict: what is good for our health doesn't always match our desires, what advances us at work sometimes doesn't fit with our moral standards, and daily tasks can make it hard to honor the duties imposed by our group loyalties. Our fears often cripple us in our spiritual search. For you, Is any one of these perspectives supreme, dictating all the others, or are we perpetually engaged in balancing them?
Reflections on Genesis 1-4.
