Guest Dvar Torah by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Hashkama Minyan
The first Rashi in Tazria explains the placing of the laws of birth-impurity after the impurity laws that apply to animals by citing the order of the Torah's account of creation in Bereshit---animals before humans. Elsewhere, he notes that the Rabbis saw the structure of the mishkan, the desert sanctuary, also mirror that order of creation. Other aggadot say that humans were created last so that we would not become prideful--after all, even a mosquito was created before us.
The Gur Aryej and Mizrachi have an extended commentary on the Rashi in Tazria. These sources occasioned the following reflection. In a shiur i would flesh all this out. If you can, have a look at these sources. In any case, I hope that these thoughts below will stimulate your thought.
Most of us do not want a world of chaos, disorder or seeming randomness. Instead, we want an ordered world. To do this, we often understand and organize the world in narratives--scientific, historical, psychological, religious, mystical. Most often we weave these narratives. together in a roughly systematic way. Most of us , however, do not have a complete, all encompassing story of our world and what it is like. In our "big" story their are "smaller" stories about apparently different narratives that share the same structure and hence some common meaning. The story of our marriage may sound a lot like the story of our parents' marriage, or the story of the marriages of our friends, or even the story of a marriage from a novel or movie that meant a lot to us. What's important is the kernel of common meaning and values that we attribute to these stories, for example, marriage as true or failed love, or as romantic attraction, or as one misunderstanding or missed opportunity after another.
What is your version or versions of the following stories? Do you or could you have a common vision or set of values or shared meaning that is expressed in all three of these stories?
The story of how the world and its structure came to be and what values , if any, this implies.
The story of what creates an anomaly, mistake, fault or failure in that structure and how to repair them.
The story of how human societies access , even commune with, what transcends the world as we understand it.

Guest Dvar Torah by Elana Flaumenhaft
Rabbi Shimon Schwalb in his sefer, Me’en Bait HaShoeva, asked why we preface the 4 sons with the words, “Baruch HaMakom…”? Rabbi Schwalb noted that we use the designation “HaMakom” when we are referring to Hashem’s middah of justice. For example, when paying a shiva call, we say “HaMakom Yinachem Etchem etc.” The reason for this is that when we find ourselves in a painful and sad situation, we feel as if there is something missing from Hashem and the way He conducts our world. Therefore we say HaMakom during those times so that we acknowledge that we know Hashem is everywhere, there is no empty place in Hashem’s existence.
As we begin fulfilling our responsibility of "והגדת לבנך", “And you will speak to your son” some of us may find ourselves without being blessed with children, or unfortunately a child who isn’t on the correct path at the moment and therefore cannot fulfill this mitzvah. So we begin the paragraph saying, “Baruch HaMakom” – we acknowledge that Hashem is truly there and everywhere. As most of us find ourselves by ourselves, without family nearby, it is important to remember that Hashem is there and always watching over us.
PESACH GUIDE & SCHEDULE 5780
Adapted from Rabbi Josh Flug OU/YU
Tuesday Night
- Zoom Mishna & Maariv at 7:45pm
- Bedikas Chametz (Checking for Chametz) should be performed after 8:18 PM (Tzeit HaKochavim)
- Recite Kiddush Levana by this time.
Wednesday Morning
- Shacharis — on Erev Pesach, we omit מזמור לתודה and למנצח.
- Fast of the Firstborn — Under the circumstances today and this particular fast, one may rely on a siyum over the phone of video conference.
- Those in the week of Shiva should participate in the 8am Siyum, as Makkos concludes with Divrei Agadatta.
- We will have Zoom Siyumim at
- 7am Bava Kama
- 8am. Makkot (Preferred for observing sitting Shiva)
- 9am Sanhedrin
- 10am Masechet Avoda Zara
- Drop off Chametz at Ohab Zedek bin (124 West 95th Street) between 9am and 11am (on from the Bedikah! - No excess).
- Latest time to eat chametz: 10:23AM
- Latest time to destroy chametz: 11:40AM
- Destroying Chametz This Year — If you can't drop off your Chametz as listed above, you can flush it down the toilet, or discard in a public receptacle on your corner.
- On erev Pesach, there is a prohibition against eating matzah. Additionally, one should not eat a meal or drink wine after the tenth hour (4:12PM). This is particularly relevant for those who are doing an erev Pesach mock seder with family over video conference.
- Eiruv Tavshilin should be prepared.
- Candle lighting should take place at 7:11PM.
Wednesday Night - Leil HaSeder
- Ma’ariv for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.
- With regard to the Hallel that many shuls have the practice of reciting on the Seder night after Ma’ariv, this practice is only for those who will be davening with a tzibur, and not at all relevant to those who will be davening alone, without a minyan. Even a large family that has a self contained minyan, but will be having the Seder together, should not recite this extra Hallel at the conclusion of Ma’ariv. The extra Hallel after Ma’ariv is only recited when there will be a larger crowd for Ma’ariv and additional pirsumei nisa (publicizing of the miracle). Nusach Ari, Nusach Sefardi and some Nusach Sefard have the minhag to say this Hallel still.
- Kiddush should not begin before tzeis hakochavim which is at 8:19PM.
- It is preferable to complete the fourth cup of wine by halachic midnight (chatzos).
Thursday - First Day
- Shacharis for Yom Tov with the proper Pesach insertions followed by complete Hallel with its berachos.
- The Torah reading for the first day is “משכו” (Shemos 12:21-51), the maftir is ובחדש הראשון (Bamidbar 28:16-25) and the haftarah is from Yehoshua 3:5-7, 5:2-6:1, 6:27.
- The Piyut of Tal which is recited on Pesach was only instituted when davening with a tzibur and not when davening alone. One can certainly recite it if they wish, but there is no mandate based on the existing custom to do so.
- Rabbi Soloveitchik z'l maintained that in order to change the manner in which we describe Hashem from “One who brings the rain” (משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם) to “One who brings the dew” (מוריד הטל) we require the authorization of the community and therefore an individual may not undertake to make this change himself. However, since there is no existent tzibur davening together at this point each individual should recite Morid HaTal in their private Mussaf prayer on the first day of Pesach. When all of the individuals across the Jewish world recite Morid HaTal in their private Mussaf this will create a “resolution of the community” that will be effective in changing the Nusach of our seasonal description of Hashem. However, from Mincha of that day and onward, those who daven Nusach Ashkenaz will stop saying Morid HaTal and those who daven Nusach Sefard will continue to say it, each one according to their custom.
- Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.
- Mincha Amidah for Yom Tov. Ashkenazim should omit משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם and should not recite מוריד הטל.
Thursday Night - Second Seder
- Nightfall is at 8:20PM. One should not make any preparations for the Seder or light candles before that time.
- Ma’ariv for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach. See note from first night regarding Hallel.
- Sefiras Ha’Omer begins. It is recited after the Amidah before Aleinu
Friday - Second Day
- Shacharis for Yom Tov with the proper Pesach insertions followed by complete Hallel with its berachos.
- The Torah reading for the second day is “שור או כשב” (Vayikra 22:26-23:44), the maftir is ובחדש הראשון (Bamidbar 28:16-25) and the haftarah is from Melachim II 23:1-9, 21-25.
- Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.
- Mincha Amidah for Yom Tov.
Friday Night - Erev Shabbat
- If one prepared an eiruv tavshilin before Yom Tov, one may cook on Yom Tov for Shabbos. One should try to ensure that all of the food that is cooked is potentially edible by sundown (Shkiah) at 7:31PM.
- Friday night candle lighting should take place after this time and no later than 7:13PM.
- Once the candles are lit, all of the stringencies of Shabbos are in effect.
- An abridged קבלת שבת is recited that begins with מזמור שיר ליום השבת. We also omit במה מדליקין.
- Ma’ariv Amidah is for Shabbos. Ya’aleh V’Yavo is added with proper insertion for Pesach.
- Vayechulu is recited after the Amidah followed by Sefiras Ha’Omer and Aleinu.
- If one accepted Shabbos early, one should omit Sefiras Ha’Omer in Ma’ariv and recite it after 8:21PM.
Shabbos Day - Chol HaMoed
- Shacharis for Shabbos. Ya’aleh V’Yavo is added with proper insertion for Pesach.
- Half Hallel is recited.
- Shir HaShirim is traditionally recited with the tzibur at this point — The custom to read Shir HaShirim on Pesach was clearly instituted only for a tzibur. Nonetheless, there is nothing prohibited about reading Shir HaShirim on Pesach without a tzibur. One should be conscious of the fact that such a reading would not constitute a fulfillment of the original minhag.
- The Torah reading for the second day is “ראה אתה” (Shemos 33:12-34:26), the maftir is והקרבתם (Bamidbar 28:19-25) and the haftarah is from Yechezkel 37:1-14.
- Mussaf for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Shabbos and Pesach.
- Mincha for Shabbos. Ya’aleh V’Yavo is added with proper insertion for Pesach.
- Shalosh Seudos should be eaten after Mincha, before 7:32PM (Shkiya)
Saturday Night - Motzaei Shabbos
- Weekday Amidah should be recited including Atah Chonantanu and Ya’aleh V’Yavo. Additionally, please note the change to ותן ברכה.
- We do not recite ויהי נועם. After the Amidah, Sefiras Ha’Omer is recited followed by Aleinu.
- Havdalah is the standard Havdalah for Motzaei Shabbos.
Sunday - Tuesday Chol HaMoed
- Zoom Hallel & Torah Reading 8:30am (Sun, Mon, Tu)
- Zoom Mishna & Maariv at 7:45pm (Sun, Mon)
- Shacharis is weekday Shacharis. מזמור לתודה is omitted. The Amidah should include Ya’aleh V’Yavo with the proper insertion for Pesach. Half Hallel is recited after the Amidah
- The Torah reading for the second day of Chol HaMoed is “קדש לי” (Shemos 13:1-16) and והקרבתם (Bamidbar 28:19-25).
- The Torah reading for the third day of Chol HaMoed is “אם כסף” (Shemos 22:24-23:19) and והקרבתם (Bamidbar 28:19-25).
- The Torah reading for the fourth day of Chol HaMoed is (Bamidbar 9:1-14) and והקרבתם (Bamidbar 28:19-25).
- We do not recite למנצח on Chol HaMoed.
- Mussaf for Yom Tov (Chol HaMoed) with proper insertions for Pesach.
- Weekday Mincha. The Amidah should include Ya’aleh V’Yavo with the proper insertion for Pesach.
Tuesday Night - Last Days
- Candle lighting should take place no later than 7:17PM.
- Shehechiyanu is not recited on the seventh or eighth of Pesach.
- Ma’ariv for Yom Tov with proper insertions for Pesach. Sefiras Ha’Omer (after 8:25PM)
- Kiddush for Yom Tov.

- Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.

Wednesday Night - Achron

Guest Dvar Torah by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Hashkama Minyan
The Parasha first deals with the mitsvah of offering the olah sacrifice, one that is completely burned on the altar and not eaten.
The word used is "Tsav."
This is the Chabad translation of the first Rashi: The expression צַו always denotes urging [to promptly and meticulously fulfill a particular commandment] for the present and also for future generations. Rabbi Simeon taught: Scripture especially needs to urge [people to fulfill commandments,] where monetary loss is involved. — [Torath Kohanim 6:1]
I add: The Kotzker Rebbe suggested that the special urging is necessary because as soon as something is required [commanded] by a source outside ourselves we find ourselves less inclined to do it, even resisting doing it.
With the exception of of moments of crisis, most of the time we think we know what we should do. And, however we came to this knowledge, we see it as something to which we ourselves have personally committed ourselves and feel like doing. But there are actions we do not really feel like doing , yet we see doing them as obligations and requirements that come from a source other than personal inclination---reason, tradition, community, etc. We have to make a special effort to "urge" ourselves to do these good things. They have a "cost"--sometimes in money, or in time, and sometimes there is a felt "cost" to our sense of simply being able to do what we personally feel like doing. We need to ask ourselves: What are the areas in my life where I think I need to make a special effort, a special "urging" to make sure that I overcome whatever is getting in the way of my doing what I should ? Will I make that special effort?

I was thinking of the cliche that one typically misses something only when it's gone. I hate that cliche (who knows what movie that comes from?? hint- the director is Jewish), but it's true, isn't it?
Too often my mind wanders when I daven, and sometimes...I'm not even too crazy about showing up. But now? Darn! I would love to go to shul and sing Friday night and see my pew pals. Sigh...
I now sometimes fantasize how incredible it's gonna be the first Shabbos when we get back to shul! Our voices will roar! Our davening will be better than ever! We will soak up Rabbi Schwartz's Torah, read Len's Parsha Picks, enjoy the herring, chulent and booze. We'll never take any of that for granted ever again. Right? Of course I'm right.
So as we go stir crazy and go further into debt...remember that this will end...soon...we will get back to work and pay off that debt...and we will always have OZ as our sanctuary, and source of comfort and help. If you need confidential assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the Rabbi at ras@ozny.org.
May Hashem give nechama to those who lost loved ones to this virus. We cannot be with you physically, but we are with you.
Shabbat Shalom!

Midrash commentary understands the opening of Parashat VaYikra as teaching us:
1. The Divine Voice spoke only to Moses in this case, and 12 others - although it sometimes spoke both to Moshe and Aaron.
2. The Divine Voice stopped at the edge of the Tent of Meeting.
3. There were periods of silence [pauses] during which Moses was to contemplate what he had heard, and if this was necessary for Moses, it is even more so for others.
While we are not Moses for the People of Israel, I think that we can still learn something important for ourselves from these comments.
We sometimes have moments of profound insight. These moments often seem to have a sense of profound focus upon us alone. Whatever "voice" is speaking to us , is speaking to us, exactly in the place where we are now. Often this moment and this place have, or come to have, a kind of special, sacred meaning for us. The meaning and implications of these focused insight experiences, however, need to be contemplated and unpacked. How do we now understand our world differently? How do we now understand people differently? What implications does our insight have for our obligations and responsibilities?

Joni Mitchell "Big Yellow Taxi"
As we approached Rosh Chodesh it was literally painful to think that our shul like those all over the country and the world would not be filled with leining and Hallel. The magnificent shul which we call home would be dark and silent. No one would open aron kodesh. No one would ascend the bima. Siddurim and chumashim are arranged on shelves in neat rows but no one would be there to open them.
For many of us during the year we might find 1000 excuses to miss davening with a minyan. What would any one of us give to be able to even daven a "quick" Mincha now and be able to hear our fellow mispallim answer along to Kedusha or Kaddish?
Every morning from Simchas Torah onward I think about Pesach.
In my closet are three very dry lulavim in their cases. Each year I preserve them in order to use in burning the chometz.
They remind me now of Hallel. The last time they were used the walls of OZ reverberated with our tefillot as we took the arba minim in hand.
Permit me for a minute to elaborate on the waving of these arba minim and how it relates to our current situation and OZ.
We take them when we praise Hashem, we take them when we ask for salvation and there are some among us who are careful to take them first thing in the morning at the earliest opportunity.
That's the way we often are motivated to come to shul.
"Hodo....Ki Tov" - there's a bar mitzvah. There's a bris...there's a kiddush. We come excited to celebrate and share good times.
"Ana Hashem....Hosheah Na" - we come to shul to beg and implore Hashem to help us or someone we know thru a difficult time. We come to say a mishaberach or say tehillim because times are not so good.
Then there are some people who wake up and shake the lulav because they don't want to wait until Hallel. We know those people who come to OZ like clockwork without any ulterior motives or agenda.
Whatever the reason people have for connecting with Hashem there's one common factor and that is each of them seeks a relationship with Hashem and they all come to OZ as THE place to do it.
I'm not asking for money. All I ask is that in this time when we are unable to be togther in that makom we all love so much to take stock and think about what you wouldn't do to be able to return speedily and in good health. THEN I want all us us to try and hold onto that longing and desire for as long as we possibly can and enhance our davening by coming as much as possible. Take advantage of our programs. Volunteer to teach, lein, daven and guard our shul. Get involved.
We will all be togther soon (IYH) and we will again have many reasons to come early and stay late in that space that is like a second home to us all. Let's recommit ourselves during this uneasy time that when we are able to return we bring as much energy, love and enthusiasm as we would do if we were able to be together tonight or tomorrow morning.

The parasha opens with the word “vayakel” ויקהל . The alternative verbs k.b.tz קבץ or a.s.f. אסף are not used. Rashi notes that vayakel is in the hifil, because, in contrast to the other two verbs that would be in the kal, it indicates causation. Moshe caused the people to gather together by speaking to them. He did not actually physically bring them together; they gathered themselves together.
People should not be passively gathered like grain. Free human beings can only be summoned and respond to speech, to a call or invitation, by coming freely. Natural needs and desires often drive the formation of social life.
We accept this.
But, to be fully human means to transcend them, to make our relationships “ more than “merely natural”. One way to do this is to use speech to summon and invite others. We offer the possibility of mutual life and presence. Our freely reaching out to each other is the true beginning of all important human projects and relationships.

As I sit at home going stir crazy, the OZ leadership bounces ideas off one another....
Since many of you will now likely be home for Pesach (Aaaargh!!!) we would like to get an idea from you if you are interested in buying catered food. If so, let us know how many people per meals you are considering, and we will work on negotiating communal pricing with caterers.
We are not promising anything at this point! It’s an exploratory idea.

Dear OZ family,
This Shabbos is Parshas Hachodesh and is a reminder that Pesach is upon us. People have many questions and I addressed some of them last night on the zoom conference. The Pesach Seder is a profoundly communal event, underscored by the invitation early on to all who are hungry and in need in the vernacular that would be understood by all. To contemplate that we will have to have seders with no guests at all, or even worse, to do so alone, is very painful. Let us hope that our scrupulous vigilance now in shutting down the spread of the Coronavirus, will allow us to ease these restrictions in time for Pesach, to allow, at least small groups to join for a Seder. This vigilance stands in sharp contrast to the very irresponsible behavior exhibited by those who refuse to avoid large indoor contact, as we see in the news. Aside from being a colossal chillul Hashem, the idea that true believers are impervious to this virus is morally obtuse, and profoundly dangerous. We surely need to call upon the abundant mercies of the Creator to make it through this crisis, but surely He expects our input as well. To this I cite the prescient words of the prophet, Yeshayahu. At the end of Chapter 26:
Go my people, enter your inner rooms, and shut the doors behind you. Hide but for a short time until the indignation passes.
This is precisely what Yeshayahu would tell us all now. Above all be safe. We all have a Yetzer Hatov to hear Kriyas Hatorah, to say Kaddish, to rejoice with a bride and groom, and many other mitzvos Hashem is keeping from us now. Right now, doing these things is dangerous and a Yetzer Harah. Our value of the preservation of life and health comes first.
There was another simcha yesterday. Let us rejoice with Mordechai Woodrow and Yarin Trabelsi on their engagement. Mazel tov.
Simcha will continue, davening continues and learning continues. But above all, be safe.

B"H

March 18, 2020
Dear Community Members,
We, the undersigned Rabbis, are sharing with you the following guidelines that we believe are of the utmost importance. As this current crisis grows in scope each and every day, we believe that it is crucial that all of us commit to doing all that we can to prevent the spread of the coronavirus in both our community and in New York City at large. These guidelines are being made in consultation with preeminent medical professionals and are consistent with what numerous other neighboring communities have taken upon themselves as well. With heartfelt Tefillah, we pray that this plague should end soon and we look forward to being together once again in our Shuls and communal institutions.
Minyanim outside of the Synagogue/House minyanim
Our members should not convene or attend minyanim in their homes, or in common spaces in their buildings. Davening should be done exclusively alone in our own homes.
Mourners/Yahrtzeit
Anyone who is a Mourner or who is observing a Yahrtzeit should not seek out a minyan to recite Kaddish.
In observance of a Yahrtzeit one should light a candle, recite a Kel Maleh Rachamim, say Tehillim 16 and learn Mishnayot in memory of their loved one.
Shabbat/Simcha Preparations
As social distancing continues, we should plan to have our Shabbat meals alone with our families. We should not be inviting guests.
Smachot, when necessary, should be limited to the minimum number of guests following these guidelines:
o Shalom Zachor: Shalom Zachor should not take place at all.
o Bris: A Bris should be made in the house with only the immediate family living in that house present. Additional guests should not be invited to the Bris. If desired, technology can be used for others to join virtually.
o Weddings should be limited to the immediate family of the bride and groom, with additional people to comprise an exact Minyan if needed, two acceptable witnesses, and one Rabbi to be Mesader Kiddushin. The Kiddushin should be done outdoors, weather permitting, and a festive meal can be made at a later point in time. We recommend that elderly grandparents should not be at the wedding.
o Sheva Brachot: Sheva Brachot should not be taking place at all.
o Naming Girls: Girls may be named privately; please reach out to your Rabbi for the nusach that should be used to do this properly. After naming a girl, the baby’s name should be publicized using electronic communications.
o Bar/Bat Mitzvah: Bar/Bat Mitzvah celebrations should not take place at this point. For a Bar Mitzvah boy who prepared for a whole year there are a couple of options dependent on each Rabbi. There may be options for making up the Kriat HaTorah at a future date when the epidemic passes and for making a celebratory party then as well.
o Funerals: Funerals should only be graveside with only immediate family and an exact Minyan. If the family does not comprise a minyan, please contact your Rabbi to help facilitate a minyan at the graveside.
o Shiva: Shiva visits should be made by phone and video and should not be made in person.
Please note: Even when family members are included, elderly individuals and those who are most vulnerable should not be present as part of the Minyan or Simcha.
Clearly these are unprecedented times. Let us take every opportunity to increase our Tefillot, intensify our study of Torah and find safe ways to be supportive to others. Hillel teaches (Pirkei Avot 1:13) “Im Lo Achshav Ematai?-If not now, then when?” In the merit of our genuine commitment to protect ourselves and our families both physically and spiritually, may we merit to Yeshuot VeNechamot, God’s salvation and consolation

Dear OZ family,
Yesterday I read a prediction made by a well known commentator that the Coronavirus will cause a breakdown in civil society. I prefer what I read in the NY Sun, in a piece by Ira Stoll, who predicts an amazing outbreak of compassion in the coming days and weeks. From the calls and emails I’m receiving from the people so many of you have called and helped, we have already seen this more rosy prediction. Many older New Yorkers recall the last two major power outages in our city. They both occurred in the swelter of summer, and had a sharp contrast. In 1977 there was widespread looting and general mayhem. In 2004, there were countless acts of compassion all over the city, and incredibly selfless acts of chesed all around. We became a different city in between and I believe we are still that same city.
We must be pro-active in finding ways to be helpful for those in need. Please keep calling the elders you were assigned to contact. I don’t have an engagement to announce in our community but we can all join a recent YU Connects couple, Chavi Kelemer and Andrew Davidsburg in our wishes for Mazel tov. On a sadder note, we extend nechama to Sylvia Lefkowitz on the passing of her husband, Martin. I have visited them over the years. Sylvia’s # is 646-382-4567.
The Mishna Berura and Rav Moshe Feinstein agree that it is preferable to daven Shacharis alone at vasikin than to daven with a minyan before or after. Vasikin means we reach the amida at sunrise (netz), which is now just about 7am. Of course that time gets earlier day by day. Click HERE for daily OZ Zmanim.
May we soon be able to enjoy the luxury of communal prayer.
With blessings of good health and tranquility.
Be safe.

Dear OZ family,
Another day.
The overriding message is “Be safe”. Safe practice is, according to Jewish law, more important than ritual practice. This is known as ”Chamira Sakanta M’Issura” and although, for many, a bitter pill to swallow, is the order of the day. My father told me that the power driving him to survival during the Holocaust, was not only to tell his story, but also to name children after his murdered family, and to say Kaddish for them. My older brother and sister bear the names of his parents, and I and my younger sister, two of his siblings, and the next three generations, which he lived to see, cover every sibling of his. It is hard to fathom that I would willingly forego Kaddish, but that is what “Chamira Sakanta M’Issura” means. Shuls are closed but hearts are open. Needs will grow in the coming days and weeks. If you were assigned names to call, please keep calling them. People will have uprooted Yom Tov plans and Seder plans, and we’ll work on that, hopefully in a better time. Meanwhile, Let us join in wishing Mazel Tov to Nicole and Brett Gartenberg, who were blessed with a baby girl, Sara Feiga, as well as to Helen and Harry Gross who were blessed with a great-grandson, born to their grandchildren Jonah and Deena. Tonight was supposed to be our shul annual dinner. This too shall pass. Be safe.
We will shortly have Mechiras Chametz forms on line. We normally solidify the transaction with a kinyan, that must be made in person. However, this year, given the constraints of the day, forms filled out on line will suffice. Look for them soon.
Also, tomorrow night at 8pm, join me on zoom.us for a class on the Laws of Pesach (details on separate email). This week we’ll discuss the preparations regarding chametz, and next week we’ll discuss the preparations for the Seder. After that we will have classes on the Haggadah.
This is a good time for binge learning, but above all, be safe.

Shalom Friends,
Please note the following from the West Side Mikvah
In order to stagger our schedule and more easily facilitate social distancing guidelines we are implementing the following:
Beginning on Tuesday March 17, the West Side Mikvah will move to appointment ONLY. Please call the Mikvah at 212-579-2011 to make an appointment.
All women will be accommodated.
Please consult your Rabbi (ras@ozny.org) should you have any questions concerning your preparations and immersion.
We request that if you are unwell in any way, in quarantine, have recently traveled to an impacted area, or have been exposed to anyone with a positive COVID-19 test please do not come to the mikvah!
The Mikvah room can only accommodate community members one at a time. When the mikvah room is vacant you will be buzzed in. Please be patient and plan ahead.
In order to properly prepare for Pesach, beginning on Tuesday March 17, the Keilim Mikvah will be open from 9am-2pm.
The West Side Mikvah prioritizes community members. At this time and we request that if you live closer to another mikvah, please use it.
With Hashem’s help we should all stay healthy so that we merit many more mitzvot!
Best wishes,
Ilana Prager
Shoshana Schwartz

Please note, at the guidance of health professionals and prominent poskim, our Shul, like many others in the NY/NJ metropolitan area, remains currently closed for Minyan & Classes to enforce Social Distancing to confront the spread of the Corona Virus.
We have arranged that Sunday morning (March 15) the Shul will be open from 9am to 1pm for the retrieval of personal items you may have left (Tallis, Tefillin, Etc...).
Another notice will go out about online class information.
If you need another time for retrieval, please contact me.

Shalom OZ Family,
Like other New York Area Shuls, we operate with local health officials and prominent Poskim to guide us through this difficult period.
Their guidance has now changed and based on their recommendation, we will cease building and service operation through the weekend and update you as conditions change.
One of the great characteristics of Orthodox Jews is quite a deficiency at this time. We are in close quarters for so many reasons, ranging from Minyanim to shiurim to frequent Simchas, and more. This puts us at a greater risk, and based on reports that we are told are about to be publicized, we are taking this step.
Today, we will have a 5:30pm Mincha in the Main Sanctuary and the building will remain open until 6pm to allow the retrieval of personal items.
Please make Shabbos 5 minutes early today and recite Tehillim 91 and 142. Use the private time to connect to Hashem. Public prayer definitely adds to our prayer experience. Yet we also have the capacity to create a profoundly meaningful private experience with the Divine. Let us seek such an experience in the coming days.
At no point throughout this ordeal was the concern for public health taken lightly by any of the Rabbis, Leadership, and Staff of this shul. I am proud of our efforts to maintain daily minyan while maintaining the highest sanitary standards recommended by the CDC and local authorities.
Cancelling group Tefillah is a serious decision. Those of us saying Kaddish and observing Yarzheit are particularly impacted, Though we cannot daven together physically, I encourage all of us to daven at the same time when minyanim are scheduled.
Let us not panic.
Let us use this opportunity for introspection and growth.
Let us use this time to enhance our own acts of Chesed and Torah. As of now, the elderly of our community are covered for their needs, but if that changes, we will need volunteers to assist them. If you are able to do this please call me at 212 865-3325. Also, this would be an excellent time to catch up on the daf, the parsha, Tanach Yomi and other learning. There are 10’s of thousands of shiurim on the YU and OU websites. I have over 1,500 on yutorah.org
May Hashem heal us and guide us through this time.
We will be stronger and better when this is over.
Kol Tuv,
Rabbi Allen Schwartz

UPDATE
Dear OZ family,
We stress the last word on this greeting because we are all indeed a family. Members of even tight-knit families sometimes disagree and especially when the disagreement involves so serious a challenge as the one we face today, we take it very seriously.
Regarding the Corona-Virus, we are precisely following the protocols set up for our area. The Public Schools continue to remain open, and the subways continue to run a block both East and west of OZ. Although there other other area synagogues that have decided to close for Shabbos, our doors will remain open. We don’t see a reason to close the shul while teeming activity continues unabated all around us. If, Chas V’shalom, the city orders a cessation of activity from Public Schools, subways and religious institutions, we will immediately follow suit. In the meantime, the shul will remain open for minyanim only.
Let us all continue to apply common sense and scrupulous attention to the guidelines we see everywhere about defeating this virus. No food will be served during this time and all shiurim will be cancelled or moved online. If you do not feel even slightly well - do not come to shul. All activity will be limited to tefilla, of which we are in need in abundance.

NYC Guidance for People Who May Have an Increased Risk for Severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)
About Novel Coronavirus
What is a novel coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that are common throughout the world. They cause illnesses ranging from the common cold to more serious illnesses like pneumonia. A novel coronavirus is a type of coronavirus that has not been previously seen in humans. Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID19) has been detected in thousands of people worldwide.
How serious is this virus and what are the range of symptoms?
Most people with COVID-19 will have mild symptoms. Symptoms can include fever, cough or shortness of breath.
Who is at higher risk for severe illness?
People who are older or may have underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, appear to have a higher risk of severe COVID-19. Children and young adults appear to be less affected.
What You Need to Know to Stay Healthy
What steps can I take to avoid getting COVID-19?
If you think you may have an increased risk for severe COVID-19, take the following steps to prepare and prevent getting infected:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve, not with your hands.
- Do not touch your face with unwashed hands.
- Stop shaking hands when you greet someone. Consider only using an elbow bump when greeting someone.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or disinfecting wipes.
- Encourage your household members and care providers to follow these healthy hygiene tips.
- Avoid nonessential travel to affected areas. Visit cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers for the latest travel health notices.
- Make a list of medications you take regularly. Ask your health care provider if you can have a 90-day supply of all necessary medications.
- If you require home care, ask your provider about plans for what will be done if a COVID-19 outbreak occurs in your community. Plans should include how to provide care without interruptions.
- Ask your provider if you should have influenza or pneumococcal vaccines.
- If your primary doctor has an online “patient portal,” become familiar with using it, in case the practice is very busy during an outbreak.
- Create an emergency contact list.
- Identify people or social groups who can assist if you need extra help.
- Consider stocking up on extra food and important household supplies.
- Take steps to prevent social isolation, in case physical travel is restricted during an outbreak. Consider connecting with others using video chat applications like Skype or FaceTime.
What should I do if I become ill while COVID-19 is in my community?
- Call your regular health care provider for guidance. Do not go to a clinic or hospital without calling ahead. New York City residents without a healthcare provider or insurance can call NYC Health + Hospitals at 844-NYC-4NYC.
- Seek medical attention promptly if your illness is worsening (e.g., you develop difficulty breathing). You should still call ahead, so that providers may prepare for your arrival.
Helpful Resources
- If you are being harassed due to your race, nation of origin or other identities, you can report discrimination or harassment to the NYC Commission on Human Rights by calling 311.
- If you are experiencing stress or feel anxious, contact NYC Well at 888-NYC-WELL (888-692-9355) or text WELL to 65173. NYC Well is a confidential help line that is staffed 24/7 by trained counselors who can provide brief supportive therapy, crisis counseling, and connections to behavioral health treatment, in more than 200 languages.
- If you need help with other support services, contact the NYC Department for the Aging’s Aging Connect at 212-AGING-NYC or 212-244-6469 to speak with an aging specialist.

SHABBAT, JAN. 10-11, 2019
Ohab Zedek Scholar in Residence Weekend
Dr. Nechumi Yaffe is a David Hartman Center Fellow and a post-doctoral research fellow at Princeton University affiliated with the Daniel Kahneman Center of Behavioral Science and Public Policy and the University Center for Human Values. She earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Nechumi’s research examines, from a social psychology perspective, how identity, social norms, and authority play a role in creating and preserving poverty and focuses on the ultra-orthodox (Haredi) community in Israel, a population currently understudied. Before entering her doctoral program, she was an advisor for the Haredi educational system where she devised the new curriculum in history and wrote the textbook now used by all Israeli Haredi high schools. In 2019 she became the first woman from Israel’s ultra-orthodox community to join the faculty at Tel Aviv University.
