Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection
How do we live a good life in order to be worthy of the love and blessing that comes our way? It surely is not enough that we do what is good simply in order to protect ourselves from suffering, or merely to benefit ourselves. It does not seem to me enough that we do what is right and good so that others will think well of us, or even so that we act according to what our society sees as appropriate. This kind of action rarely gets past self interest. Even when it does benefit others it is primarily rooted in our search for payoff or for our own personal success. In fact, it is mostly about "me".
To my way of thinking, to actually be worthy of the love and blessing that comes our way we have to start living beyond "I. me. mine"---even sophisticated versions of this , in which my "I-me-mine" also benefits your "I-me-mine". We need to reach for the common good that binds us beyond even the mutual agreement of self interested "social contracts". We need to seek the principles and purposes of our common good. We seek what is rooted in realities that transcend the limits of our own given natural desires, perceptions, purposes and interests. To be worthy of love and blessing, we need to seek what transcends us, whether this is philosophical, religious, mystical or spiritual.
These remarks are reflections on Deuteronomy 7:12ff.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection
“Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me."
Sometimes, as we experience the cosmos, we are awestruck. For moderns, it is often the above classic quote from Immanuel Kant that expresses the source of this feeling. I think we have somewhat the same dichotomy in some traditional Jewish sources. On the one hand, the created order of nature and the miracles that reveal a God who is greater than nature. On the other, the moral order and the God who institutes and, at the limit, enforces it. Although we are not very clear on the relationship between the moral and natural orders, our experience of their compelling power is often the source of a spiritual consciousness. As I study these sources, I too find my mind filled with ever new and increasing admiration and awe.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection: Devarim
For most people, life is good, but it is also dotted with difficult, trying, painful moments. We don't want them to happen, but they do and we do our best to navigate them. If possible, we don't do this alone but, as the Beatles put it, we "get by with a little help from our friends".
Some of those moments are the result of our own, often moral, mistakes. Here is a thought for those of us who want to be one of the "friends" that helps others sweeten or soften the demanding moments in life that are due to their own moral errors :
First, assume that even an immoral or unrighteous act originates in a good place that ends up distorted. We know from research, for example, that in intimate relationships, painful, brutal arguments are most often actually about preserving the relationship. That is, such arguing "begins" in a belief--often unstated or even below the level of awareness-- the relationship would be intolerable if things are not done as they ask, or if they are not in control. They might have to leave. They are arguing so that they can stay and not leave. The origin is good --preserving the relationship--but it gets distorted into a search for dominance or control rather than for greater understanding and creative compromise.
Second, use the emotional or cognitive power of the original goal to overcome the negative forces producing the problem and find better ways to achieve the goal. . In our example, if they can get in touch with how important preserving their relationship is to them, perhaps they [ or you with them ] can find better alternatives to the endless painful arguments. The more power you, as a friend, have to reorient them toward the "original" [good] source, the more likely it is that they will " get by with a little help from their friends". Granted, this approach is not perfect, not easy to do and doesn't always make things better, but , in a difficult world, it offers one more possibility for fixing things and bringing people together.
***The above thought is based on my understanding and adaptation of the Hasidic commentary of the Noam Elimelech on Parashat Devarim and the related doctrine of "sweetening" judgement found in the Keter Shem Tov.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection
Let's think about the power of human speech. We can start with Numbers 30:2ff which presents laws of vows. In traditional sources, making a "vow" means that we take something that was permitted for our use and deliberately use language to make it forbidden for our use--- "this cake, until now I could eat it, from now on, it is forbidden to me." From our point of view, we alter the nature or meaning of the object. It was "neutral", we could do with it what we wanted, Now, it has become something we can not use.
Why would we make a material object forbidden to us? Maybe we are on a diet and want to strengthen our resolve to do without it. We speak a vow that makes fattening foods out of bounds. Or, we want to sanctify something, give it a special holiness. We speak a vow that turns it into something that can be used solely for sacred purposes. Perhaps, we want these particular rings to serve as a symbol of our marriage and so we "vow" that they are our wedding ring. Or, if we are less noble or more angry, we want to create a distance between ourselves and others, so we "vow" that their property is off limits to us--- so that we can never visit with them or eat a meal with them again. It was these negative kinds of vows, as well as the possibility that we might fail to keep our word, that brought Jewish tradition to discourage the making of vows.
Speech can also be a mistake. Can we correct a " speech" mistake? Can we, for example, correct having made a vow for the wrong reasons or a vow that has unforeseen negative consequences? If we regret that we made the commitment, we often turn to people whose wisdom we trust. We talk it through with them, and sometimes even give them the power to "annul" our vow-- for example, we give them the power to make us feel that, since we would never have made the vow if we had known the the damage that keeping it would bring about, we no longer required to keep that vow.
Notice: Human speech is a social reality; we do not vow in our own private language. This is the power of human speech: it creates personal and social realities and in doing so it can support the best in us or amplify the worst. Clearly, we need to be careful about what we "vow". Even more, we need to be careful about how we use speech to construct our world, its limits and its possibilities.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection
Imagine that you have a very important life issue that you must address here and now . It involves significant moral and religious values. But, any action you take that really confronts this problem has serious consequences, not just for you but also for many others. If you are wrong, you will bring plague and disaster upon those around you. If you are right, you will bring unity and peace to your part of the world. To complicate matters, although you think you are clear about what's right, many others, whom you seriously respect, are themselves not really sure what to do. If you act, you will be standing alone on a matter of ultimate importance. You ask yourself: Am I a crazy off base fanatic or a truly devoted spiritual hero? What do you do?

Shavuot Craft Project - Sunday, May 24th 11:30am
Torah Thought by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Hashkama Minyan
Why do we count things? Typically, we have practical concerns - objectives, goals - and we need to know if we have enough resources to do so. We want to use what we are counting. Do we have enough food for our guests? Enough paint to cover al the walls? Enough capital to last the next few quarters? This is enumeration..1,2,3....But: we sometimes count what we have just because we love and appreciate it. Counting is a way of reviewing what we care about, a way of putting it into order. Show me what you put time into counting and arranging without any particular task to be performed and I'll show you what you hold dear, what you value just for itself, what you find intrinsically worthy of attention of your concern and commitment. We sometimes count just because we love and cherish.
* At the beginning of the book of Numbers, G'd orders yet a third census, a counting of the People Israel--the first was after the Exodus, the second after the episode with the Golden Calf and this third counting precedes the building and installation of the desert sanctuary in which G'd will be present with the People and where He will speak with Moses. Rashi , following a rabbinic text, comments that G'd counts Israel the "census" of the People is out of love, because they are so dear to Him. Although each census might have a practical concern, these sources insist that it is fundamentally not because G'd wants to use Israel but because he holds them dear. The above are my brief reflections on this one small but essential point.

Guest Dvar Torah by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Hashkama Minyan
Two sons of Aaron, Nadav and Avihu, died when inappropriately approaching the holy of holies. At the beginning of parasha acharei mot, their death is mentioned and connected to their having "come close" to this sacred place---perhaps because they did so in an inappropriate way or perhaps because they did so at a wrong time. Rashi understands this as strengthening the warning to Aaron to respect temporal boundaries in entering the holy of holies--to avoid the familiarity of acting as if he can come and go as he pleases. He thinks the incident is mentioned to motivate Aaron to take respecting temporal boundaries very seriously. He seems to understand the text as saying that they died not just when they acted inappropriately with respect to this most sacred space but actually because they did not respect proper temporal limitations when approaching the sacred. This occasioned the following reflection:
Since everything is a divine creation, all of nature and humanity is in some sense sacred. But, of course, some objects, times, places and even people--who are all of equal value-- are more intensely sacred than others. Encountering them allows for special access to a transcendent dimension. Some objects, times, places and people are more inspiring than others. Being with them, we feel that we are at the edge of a greater reality; we are at a kind if portal to a reality that we can not understand, if we can even grasp it at all.
But: we need to respect the boundaries, physical and temporal, of these sacred realities. We must be careful not to become overly familiar with them, We must be careful not to take them for granted. Moments with the people, places, even the things that are important to us, that inspire us...that open a door to a greater dimension of reality and understanding..must be loved, respected, cherished and valued. We must be careful not to take them for granted. We must be careful not to think that they are there merely for us to "use", even for good purposes---that would be the beginning of a spiritual and moral death.

Guest Dvar Torah by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard, Hashkama Minyan
The first Rashi in Tazria explains the placing of the laws of birth-impurity after the impurity laws that apply to animals by citing the order of the Torah's account of creation in Bereshit---animals before humans. Elsewhere, he notes that the Rabbis saw the structure of the mishkan, the desert sanctuary, also mirror that order of creation. Other aggadot say that humans were created last so that we would not become prideful--after all, even a mosquito was created before us.
The Gur Aryej and Mizrachi have an extended commentary on the Rashi in Tazria. These sources occasioned the following reflection. In a shiur i would flesh all this out. If you can, have a look at these sources. In any case, I hope that these thoughts below will stimulate your thought.
Most of us do not want a world of chaos, disorder or seeming randomness. Instead, we want an ordered world. To do this, we often understand and organize the world in narratives--scientific, historical, psychological, religious, mystical. Most often we weave these narratives. together in a roughly systematic way. Most of us , however, do not have a complete, all encompassing story of our world and what it is like. In our "big" story their are "smaller" stories about apparently different narratives that share the same structure and hence some common meaning. The story of our marriage may sound a lot like the story of our parents' marriage, or the story of the marriages of our friends, or even the story of a marriage from a novel or movie that meant a lot to us. What's important is the kernel of common meaning and values that we attribute to these stories, for example, marriage as true or failed love, or as romantic attraction, or as one misunderstanding or missed opportunity after another.
What is your version or versions of the following stories? Do you or could you have a common vision or set of values or shared meaning that is expressed in all three of these stories?
The story of how the world and its structure came to be and what values , if any, this implies.
The story of what creates an anomaly, mistake, fault or failure in that structure and how to repair them.
The story of how human societies access , even commune with, what transcends the world as we understand it.

Guest Dvar Torah by Elana Flaumenhaft
Rabbi Shimon Schwalb in his sefer, Me’en Bait HaShoeva, asked why we preface the 4 sons with the words, “Baruch HaMakom…”? Rabbi Schwalb noted that we use the designation “HaMakom” when we are referring to Hashem’s middah of justice. For example, when paying a shiva call, we say “HaMakom Yinachem Etchem etc.” The reason for this is that when we find ourselves in a painful and sad situation, we feel as if there is something missing from Hashem and the way He conducts our world. Therefore we say HaMakom during those times so that we acknowledge that we know Hashem is everywhere, there is no empty place in Hashem’s existence.
As we begin fulfilling our responsibility of "והגדת לבנך", “And you will speak to your son” some of us may find ourselves without being blessed with children, or unfortunately a child who isn’t on the correct path at the moment and therefore cannot fulfill this mitzvah. So we begin the paragraph saying, “Baruch HaMakom” – we acknowledge that Hashem is truly there and everywhere. As most of us find ourselves by ourselves, without family nearby, it is important to remember that Hashem is there and always watching over us.
PESACH GUIDE & SCHEDULE 5780
Adapted from Rabbi Josh Flug OU/YU
Tuesday Night
- Zoom Mishna & Maariv at 7:45pm
- Bedikas Chametz (Checking for Chametz) should be performed after 8:18 PM (Tzeit HaKochavim)
- Recite Kiddush Levana by this time.
Wednesday Morning
- Shacharis — on Erev Pesach, we omit מזמור לתודה and למנצח.
- Fast of the Firstborn — Under the circumstances today and this particular fast, one may rely on a siyum over the phone of video conference.
- Those in the week of Shiva should participate in the 8am Siyum, as Makkos concludes with Divrei Agadatta.
- We will have Zoom Siyumim at
- 7am Bava Kama
- 8am. Makkot (Preferred for observing sitting Shiva)
- 9am Sanhedrin
- 10am Masechet Avoda Zara
- Drop off Chametz at Ohab Zedek bin (124 West 95th Street) between 9am and 11am (on from the Bedikah! - No excess).
- Latest time to eat chametz: 10:23AM
- Latest time to destroy chametz: 11:40AM
- Destroying Chametz This Year — If you can't drop off your Chametz as listed above, you can flush it down the toilet, or discard in a public receptacle on your corner.
- On erev Pesach, there is a prohibition against eating matzah. Additionally, one should not eat a meal or drink wine after the tenth hour (4:12PM). This is particularly relevant for those who are doing an erev Pesach mock seder with family over video conference.
- Eiruv Tavshilin should be prepared.
- Candle lighting should take place at 7:11PM.
Wednesday Night - Leil HaSeder
- Ma’ariv for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.
- With regard to the Hallel that many shuls have the practice of reciting on the Seder night after Ma’ariv, this practice is only for those who will be davening with a tzibur, and not at all relevant to those who will be davening alone, without a minyan. Even a large family that has a self contained minyan, but will be having the Seder together, should not recite this extra Hallel at the conclusion of Ma’ariv. The extra Hallel after Ma’ariv is only recited when there will be a larger crowd for Ma’ariv and additional pirsumei nisa (publicizing of the miracle). Nusach Ari, Nusach Sefardi and some Nusach Sefard have the minhag to say this Hallel still.
- Kiddush should not begin before tzeis hakochavim which is at 8:19PM.
- It is preferable to complete the fourth cup of wine by halachic midnight (chatzos).
Thursday - First Day
- Shacharis for Yom Tov with the proper Pesach insertions followed by complete Hallel with its berachos.
- The Torah reading for the first day is “משכו” (Shemos 12:21-51), the maftir is ובחדש הראשון (Bamidbar 28:16-25) and the haftarah is from Yehoshua 3:5-7, 5:2-6:1, 6:27.
- The Piyut of Tal which is recited on Pesach was only instituted when davening with a tzibur and not when davening alone. One can certainly recite it if they wish, but there is no mandate based on the existing custom to do so.
- Rabbi Soloveitchik z'l maintained that in order to change the manner in which we describe Hashem from “One who brings the rain” (משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם) to “One who brings the dew” (מוריד הטל) we require the authorization of the community and therefore an individual may not undertake to make this change himself. However, since there is no existent tzibur davening together at this point each individual should recite Morid HaTal in their private Mussaf prayer on the first day of Pesach. When all of the individuals across the Jewish world recite Morid HaTal in their private Mussaf this will create a “resolution of the community” that will be effective in changing the Nusach of our seasonal description of Hashem. However, from Mincha of that day and onward, those who daven Nusach Ashkenaz will stop saying Morid HaTal and those who daven Nusach Sefard will continue to say it, each one according to their custom.
- Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.
- Mincha Amidah for Yom Tov. Ashkenazim should omit משיב הרוח ומוריד הגשם and should not recite מוריד הטל.
Thursday Night - Second Seder
- Nightfall is at 8:20PM. One should not make any preparations for the Seder or light candles before that time.
- Ma’ariv for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach. See note from first night regarding Hallel.
- Sefiras Ha’Omer begins. It is recited after the Amidah before Aleinu
Friday - Second Day
- Shacharis for Yom Tov with the proper Pesach insertions followed by complete Hallel with its berachos.
- The Torah reading for the second day is “שור או כשב” (Vayikra 22:26-23:44), the maftir is ובחדש הראשון (Bamidbar 28:16-25) and the haftarah is from Melachim II 23:1-9, 21-25.
- Mussaf Amidah for Yom Tov with the proper insertions for Pesach.
- Mincha Amidah for Yom Tov.
Friday Night - Erev Shabbat
- If one prepared an eiruv tavshilin before Yom Tov, one may cook on Yom Tov for Shabbos. One should try to ensure that all of the food that is cooked is potentially edible by sundown (Shkiah) at 7:31PM.
- Friday night candle lighting should take place after this time and no later than 7:13PM.
- Once the candles are lit, all of the stringencies of Shabbos are in effect.
- An abridged קבלת שבת is recited that begins with מזמור שיר ליום השבת. We also omit במה מדליקין.
- Ma’ariv Amidah is for Shabbos. Ya’aleh V’Yavo is added with proper insertion for Pesach.
- Vayechulu is recited after the Amidah followed by Sefiras Ha’Omer and Aleinu.
- If one accepted Shabbos early, one should omit Sefiras Ha’Omer in Ma’ariv and recite it after 8:21PM.
Shabbos Day - Chol HaMoed
- Shacharis for Shabbos. Ya’aleh V’Yavo is added with proper insertion for Pesach.
- Half Hallel is recited.
- Shir HaShirim is traditionally recited with the tzibur at this point — The custom to read Shir HaShirim on Pesach was clearly instituted only for a tzibur.
