HASHKAMA MINYAN - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

Profound religious experience creates/allows a series of interconnecting psycho-spiritual processes that are often focused around a problem. We struggle to find ways for the different elements of the processes to work together synthetically. For example, as we work through the Haggadah, we might ask: What does redemption mean? to me? to us? We might begin to think about what " enslaves" us and what might free us and help us move beyond our spiritual and psychological limits. Throughout our seder, the Haggadah is "the place" in which we ask : What would it mean for us to be free?
As we succeed in forming unified answers to our questions, , we experience a type of catharsis, even deliverance. We have moments of deep comprehension and commitment, moments of transition toward greater freedom. Given this way of understanding religious/spiritual experience, we may say that, at a Pesach Seder, the participants seek to get past sharing interesting ideas and become able to say: I'm experiencing multiple personal "transitions" that are here and now resulting in personal transformations, movements toward being free. These liberating transformations are an important part of what makes us human.

Redemption means liberation from being the captive of a harmful, painful, or distressing situation. It also suggests finding one's proper place in the world. We may be redeemed as an individual, as a family, as a People, as a nation, even as a universe. The story of both liberation and finding one's place unites the past, the present and the future. It is a narrative at once both physical and spiritual, subjective and objective, sacred and profane. The redeeming moment is an instant in which things will either come together or explode. Once we have been redeemed, we seek to relive that moment, returning again and again to it ---remembering it, celebrating it, understanding it. But it eludes our grasp and we know that we will have to return.

Tips to Ensure an Easier Fast

While some people fast with little difficulty, most of us expect to feel more or less bedraggled after only a few hours. If fasting means headaches and assorted misery for you, it might be the fault of what you eat or drink beforehand. A few simple precautions in planning your pretaanit menu could make all the difference.

Drink Plenty of Fluids

Water has been called “the indispensable nutrient” for a very good reason. Although a person can live without food for weeks, a few days without water would be fatal. Water makes up approximately 60 percent of the body’s weight and is involved in practically every bodily function. Among its essential tasks, it transports nutrients and oxygen through the blood; maintains body temperature; lubricates the joints; cushions a developing fetus and serves as a medium for the thousands of crucial chemical reactions taking place in the body.
Much of the discomfort commonly experienced during a fast may be due to avoidable water loss. Treat yourself to a leisurely glass of a non-caffeinated beverage several times a day well before a planned fast. Providing the body with enough fluids to function properly is a daily business. Your recommended intake is six to eight 8-ounce glasses (or their equivalent) per day, but that should be upped to eight to ten glasses the day before a fast. (Because the elderly tend to have less developed thirst sensations than younger people, they should be especially careful about getting their daily quota of water.) Don’t worry about drinking too much, since the body is highly efficient at getting rid of what it doesn’t need.
Beverages are not the only source of water. Even foods you might consider dry contain some water. Most fruits, for instance, are more than 80 percent water; bread, around 35 percent. Eggs consist of 75 percent water; meats, between 40 and 75 percent; vegetables, from 70 to 95 percent. Although coffee and tea also supply water, the diuretic properties of caffeine make these beverages inadvisable at a pre-fast meal. Diuretics produce water loss
at the cell level and therefore ultimately increase the body’s need for water.

Decrease Protein

Most Americans consume far too much protein, averaging 2-3 times more than needed. A growing body of evidence suggests that high animal protein intake can be a contributing factor in heart disease, certain cancers and may pose a problem for those suffering from kidney disease.
Eating excessive amounts of protein may also be counterproductive before a fast. Since protein attracts water, too much of it may actually leach water from the tissues. In extreme cases, dehydration could result because the unneeded protein pulls out water that will later be necessary to remove the waste products of protein synthesis from the body.

Increase Starch and Fiber

Sugars (including honey and corn syrup) are simple carbohydrates. Starch and most dietary fibers are considered complex carbohydrates because they are chemical chains of many sugar molecules. During digestion both starch and sugar break down into glucose — the simplest form of sugar. Consumption of complex carbohydrates helps to ease the pangs of a fast because they take longer to break down in the digestive process.
A diet of reduced intake is best supplemented with additional complex carbohydrates. Increasing those carbs will also help the body retain water.
Your best bet before a fast, then, is to load up on the following foods: breads and cereals (especially wholegrain); pasta, rice and potatoes; vegetables with edible skins, stems, and seeds; legumes; fruits (especially those with edible skins and seeds); nuts and popcorn (without the added fat and salt it makes a great, healthy snack).

Decrease Salt

No real news here. When you eat salted foods, the sodium in your blood level rises. This not only stimulates the brain’s thirst receptor (which triggers the thirst sensation), it also affects the body’s water requirement, because water is needed to remove salt from the body. So even if you can’t live without pickles and other salted delicacies on a daily basis, try to resist anything very salty before a fast.

Avoid Caffeine

If you regularly drink more than two or three cups of coffee a day—or if you are a caffeinated cola fanatic—consider tapering off several days before, so that by one or two days prior to the fast you will not be consuming any caffeine at all. Although caffeine isn’t technically addictive, the body becomes accustomed to its stimulant effects. Suddenly abstaining from caffeine after an extended period of even moderate intake will probably produce the characteristic “withdrawal headache.” The diuretic properties of caffeine, as mentioned earlier, will aggravate you further by increasing your need for water. Finally, you can minimize water loss by being careful not to exert yourself too much the day before a fast. Exercise only moderately, and stay out of the sun as much as possible.
By following the suggested recommendations set forth, some of the discomfort experienced on a taanit can be alleviated.

The Basics

Include:
Eight to ten glasses of water (or other, non-caffeinated beverages)
Small portions of animal protein.
Large portions of starch and carbohydrates (whole-grain breads and
cereals, pasta, potatoes, legumes and unsalted popcorn).
Vegetables and fruits with edible skins or seeds.

Avoid:
Coffee, tea, caffeinated sodas
fried, salted, or spicy foods.

Menu Suggestions:
Liberal amounts of plain water, 100 percent fruit juice, seltzer, and herbal tea (teabags rather than bulk tea are preferable)
Whole-grain challah.
Chicken (broiled, baked, grilled, boiled).
Rice (preferably brown) and lentils or limas.
Lightly sautéed or steamed mixed vegetables (zucchini, summer squash, snow peas, carrots) or tossed salad with romaine or other dark green varieties of lettuce.
Cakes and lots of fresh fruit.

WELCOME SCHOLAR IN RESIDENCE

Rabbi Mordechai Becher, originally from Australia, is a world renowned lecturer and writer. He serves as an instructor at Yeshiva University and as alumni Rabbi of Neve Yerushalayim College. He received his ordination from the Chief Rabbinate of Israel and the Chief Rabbi of Jerusalem, holds an MA in Medieval Jewish History, and is completing a PhD from the Bernard Revel Graduate School. He taught at Ohr Somayach and Neve Yerushalayim in Jerusalem and served in the Israel Defense Forces.
Rabbi Becher has answered thousands of questions on AsktheRabbi.org, presents a Talmud class: ‘Dimensions of the Daf’ on cable TV with the Jewish Broadcasting Service and was senior lecturer for Gateways for 20 years. Rabbi Becher’s latest book, Gateway to Judaism, published by Artscroll/Shaar Press, is in its tenth printing. He has taught in the USA, Canada, England, Israel, South Africa, Australia and Russia, and is a scholar in residence for Legacy Kosher Tours. He has led tours in Africa, Australia, Czech Republic, China, England, Hungary, India, Italy, Israel, Japan, Panama, Russia, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.
During the Pandemic, Rabbi Becher led a very popular Torah Tour of the Central Park Zoo for O.Z. and we are excited to have him back for a full Shabbos experience! The Shabbos Schedule is listed below.

When we are doing well in life, measuring our success [ counting resources and wealth, surveying our professional achievements, etc. ] may be very reassuring and even celebratory. Does this makes sense? While we are not responsible for our natural endowments or for the circumstances into which we are born, we can take some credit for our achievements due to the use that we have made of the gifts of our birth. Nonetheless, there is the risk that we will become arrogant, celebrating ourselves as"better" than others in a way that denigrates them. Also, the knowledge of our success may invite jealousy. Some may wish that our fortunes change and that we be laid as low as we now are high. So, we ask: How much of all the ups and downs of our condition is due to ourselves? to others? to the nature of the world? to G-d?

We wear different types of clothing--daily work clothes, casual outfits for relaxation, formal attire for special occasions, even items that mark moments of spiritual meaning such as a talit, a kittle, a wedding dress and veil, etc. Clothes relate to what we are doing and its meaning. They may come with the role that we are playing or our part in the task at hand----police, medical or military uniforms, for example. Why not think about your own ways of dressing. What messages are you sending? Does what you wear put you at risk? Does it protect you? Is it seen as special or as transporting you to special spiritual places?

Where does G-d dwell ? The Kotzger rebbe famously said " Wherever we let Him in." Although the human heart is a dwelling place for the Divine, most human societies build "houses" and invite Him in. It's very hard for people to keep faith with invisible beings. hence places of worship and rituals that join communities of faith together , engage the realm of the invisible, etc. These places-temples, churches, synagogues, mosques--are "open to the infinite", even if they cannot contain it. Is it wrong, then, if we ask ourselves which physical spaces provide us with the space for G'd to enter? Does this distract us from opening our hearts?

Is there anything spiritual in law? Clearly, the Hebrew Bible [TaNaCH] thinks so. One meaning of encountering the Divine is expressed in teaching through law/rules. Of course, there is more --narrative, poetry, theology, even history and cosmology. But, the Sinai encounter includes , even focuses its concern on, how G-d wants people to live/act/behave both individually and as groups.
The Jewish system of law [halakha] , while extensive ,is not however totalitarian and leaves most of our time for us to structure. And, of course, since laws do not interpret or apply themselves, our personal lives, and the life of our communities, are relatively diverse. This makes living a life governed by Divine law complicated.

The spiritual life, Jewish or otherwise, then finds its expression in part in law [rules and rituals]. Among all the many possibilities for how humans should live, spiritual vision partially marks out a conception of those to be sought out and those to be avoided. In short, our spiritual commitment to [law] action must be guided by/rooted in our understanding of our highest values. Once again: this makes living a life governed by Divine law complicated.

In our world of so many different and opposite kinds of things, is there an underlying unity? For the Greeks, maybe water, maybe matter, or maybe mind. Or, for the more mystically inclined, the creative, world-ordering presence of the Divine. In our own lives as well we may ask: Is there any way to bring together our many different wants, goals, drives, interests, theories and perceptions? Is there somehow a "unity", a unifying task, purpose or goal to our existence? Such unity seems to require a conjunction of opposites--different things somehow paradoxically actually being the same. And it is not not very easy for us to see how even the Creator of the world would be able to achieve such a joining of opposites. We can sometimes understand why we have to suffer through tough times. Either we have made a serious mistake and these pains are the consequences, or we can see that the demands made on us by our difficulties will improve us as human beings---better understanding, greater knowledges, more sensitive to the pain of others, more resilient, etc. But, not all such situations can be explained, or justified. They must simply be endured. In short, life sometimes makes moral sense and sometimes doesn't. This raises the question: Do you think that in the long run human life, with all of its ethical demands, its successes, its failures as well as its unexplained and unearned pains, makes moral sense?

People we care about die. How do we say goodbye to those we love, to the family, friends and teachers with whom we have spent an important part of our lives? As a start, we gratefully appreciate the moral and spiritual quality of their lives . And how they helped makes us who we are. We do this both in our own minds and by sharing stories about them with others. Still, we know that in order to go on with our own lives, we have to put away what remains of their physical presence . We do so and then we can grieve. But, when possible, , we put it where we can find it and perhaps, when we visit it there, reconnect again with them on a deeper level.

We lost the job and the connections, but our skills and knowledge base remain. Our relationship dissolves in anger, frustration and regret but what we learned through it is not gone. Our body deteriorates physically but our resilience and coping ability are there to carry us through. And, as we emerge from a life "catastrophe", we find new footing and get under way again.
