Debra Brunner of The Together Plan: Remembering the
Brest-Litvosk Jewish Cemetery  - ‘A Memorial Using the Reclaimed Headstones’

The Together Plan, along with its sister non-profit in the USA, Jewish Tapestry Project, are developing a whole new approach to community building in the former Soviet Union & Eastern Europe; through a range of pioneering projects, education, cultural heritage, and ancestral connections. 

UK born, Debra Brunner has been working in the field of Jewish community development and Jewish cultural heritage in Belarus for over 13 years; building a better, stronger, and more cohesive Jewish landscape. She is the co-founder of The Together Plan, President of the Jewish Tapestry Project, and the founder of the Polotsk Jewish Cultural Educational Foundation in Belarus.

HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

What can we do if we have an overwhelming urge to do something we believe is wrong? Most of the time, we are not facing this question. But sometimes, we want to say hurtful things to others, especially those we love. Or, we want to cheat on an exam, our taxes, or our spouse. Usually, self-control is sufficient. We stay silent; we focus on our exams; we report our income and keep faith with those we love. But sometimes, the urge seems beyond our control. What then? 


Here is a paradoxical possibility. Imagine that you can find a way to do what you want but  first you must  think of or even act out a way that will make doing it far less attractive. You can cheat, but you must first write on a separate paper, "I am cheating on this exam and will not sign a statement that I have neither given nor received aid on this test" You can cheat on your taxes, but you must tell your accountant that you are under-reporting your income, etc. The goal is to slow things down and spoil the imagined pleasure. 


Will it work? Maybe. But it's way ahead of just giving in to urges that will make you feel ashamed.

Sometimes love is a matter of the heart. We love what we are emotionally or erotically attached to. Other times it’s a matter of mind. We analyze, understand, are impressed, and appreciate the unique quality of someone or something. Still, other times, love is a matter of will. We love someone because we are ethically obligated to do so.
 
Why not all three? Will: We should love our children.  Heart: As a rule, we also feel especially attached to them. Mind: As they grow, we may come to appreciate the quality of their character and achievements.  Can you think of other relationships that begin with obligation, move toward understanding and expand into deep feelings of love?

RABBI'S GUIDELINES

• There are no food restrictions in the meal (Shalosh Seudos) before the fast: we may have meat, wine, and any number of dishes. We may eat in a large groups and bentsch with a mezuman. No symbolicly mournful foods are eaten.
• Shalosh Seudos should conclude before sunset (8:06pm), which is when the fast starts. Shabbos Mincha at OZ will meet early (5:00pm) to facilitate the timing of this meal. Maariv will begin at 9:05pm
• Shoes worn for Tisha B’Av should be prepared before Shabbos. If one forgot to prepare shoes in advance, recite ‘HaMavdil’ at 8:56pm and wear them to shul.
• Ata Chonantanu is recited at Maariv, but Havdala is made after the fast. No melacha should be performed until after Maariv or reciting Hamavdil. Only Borei Morei HaEish is recited on Motzei Shabbos, preferably before Eichah.
• If one must eat or drink during the Fast, Havdala should be recited first over Orange or Apple Juice - not Wine or Grape Juice. This Havdalah begins with Shehakol and skips Besamim.
• Nursing mothers or pregnant women who are disturbed by the effects of the fast should please ask for specific details about how to approach the fast.
• After the Fast, we may not eat until Havdala, which begins with Borei Pri haGefen, skipping Besmamim and HaEish. Ata Chonantanu is not recited in Maariv after Tisha B’Av, and Kiddush Levana is recited Sunday night.
• Restrictions conclude with the Fast — But Do not have Meat or Wine at Break-fast

HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

Law exists to order our society in just ways and direct our most profound spiritual and moral aspirations. For some of us, this makes the law a blessing. For others, it's just something to live with. However, there are always those who resent the law because they resent all power, especially power that keeps them from getting exactly what they want. They are contentious and troublesome. They disrespect the law and judges, whether or not it is deserved. Why, then, do leaders and judges agree to do their jobs? The best do so because they feel a moral and spiritual call to institute justice and support our highest aspirations. O.K. It's a cliche, But some cliches are important to think about.

We know what comes with a meaningful life journey. There are the necessary efforts, commitments, and difficult decisions; there are the risks, the failures, and the successes. 
We have our disappointments and our celebrations. 

We also set aside special times for reflection on our life journey. We struggle with our mistakes, large and small, and work to correct them and make up for them. 

Sometimes, we can't help but get discouraged. 

How do we avoid the deep sadness and discouragement that comes with seeing that we keep "getting it wrong"? One answer worth thinking about: The joy of our life journey comes from our faith in our ongoing spiritual process of expanding self-awareness and self-renewal. 

Reflections on the Jewish High Holiday season

SECURITY MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

This week we all witnessed multiple acts of violence and hate. All of us are sometimes at a loss to understand how and why these evil acts occur and continue to occur with seemingly no end in sight. I believe that there are nearly always common patterns which repeat themselves over and over again - and that our path towards stemming this scourge is in recognizing the patterns and making sure that those who would commit violence are denied the means and liberty to carry them out. To be clear - I'm not taking a political stand but rather a practical one. 

As I've stated many times before in letters like this - there is a TON you can do to help keep your friends and neighbors safe. 

To date nearly every single violent act we've sadly grown accustomed to seeing on the news has been planned. Part of the planning nearly always involves a certain amount of research and reconnaissance. The shooter in Highland Park wanted to target synagogues but found them to be rather difficult targets mostly due to the alert and proactive security teams. 

You know where I'm going with this. 

We've been fortunate to have a very astute and engaged team at OZ. But I need your help to ensure our continued safety and security. 

You don't have to have krav maga skills or really do anything more than help us be yet another set of eyes and ears in and around OZ. 

It doesn't require a commitment beyond rudimentary training (non-physical) and the time you can offer both inside and perhaps outside our magnificent shul.

The OZ Men's Daf Yomi Shiur was started in 1997 and has a rotation of different Maggedei Shiur led by Rabbi Allen Schwartz and Rabbi Shlomo Gottesman. Since inception we have completed learning Talmud Bavli together more than 3 times! 

During the week the shiur starts at 7am and you can participate both remotely and in person in the classrooms Friday through Monday (Tuesday - Thursday are only remote; we will resume in person throughout the week once the Bais Midrash re-opens). On Shabbat the shiur takes place between Mincha & Ma'ariv and on Sunday the start time is 8:45am. The weekday start time enables attendees to attend either the 6:10am or 8am Shacharit services (ie. before or after the shiur). For those attending remotely, the dial-in for the shiur is (425) 535-9424. Do you think about people the same way that you think about objects and things?
and things? Sometimes we do. Things may serve a purpose; we also hire people because they serve our purposes. People are of intrinsic worth; beautiful objects may also be seen as of inherent value. But there is a difference. Human beings live lives that may have moral and spiritual significance. The things that we make do not act. They have histories, not lives. They may be used for a moral purpose, but they are in and of themselves morally neutral.  

One other thing to think about. What about creation? Does nature, with its trees, grass, animals, etc., have intrinsic value because it comes from a divine source? And, if nature-as-creation is inherently sacred, does it have a life? A history?

HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

The meaning in our lives involves the ties that bind us to those we love and care for. These ties  create important obligations and responsibilities. They also provide some of our greatest satisfactions as we teach, learn from  and influence each other. 
 
But we are also individuals who lead our own lives. Sometimes we have to separate or even to distance ourselves from those we love. We grow up and move out. We move on to another job. Or there just isn't enough space or resources for everyone. No matter how close we are, there are always some moments of leave taking and separation. Even when unavoidable, these are some of the most difficult and painful moments in life.  
 
So we ask:   When we do have to separate, what is it of value that we taking with us? What of our own are we leaving with them? What will last and what will be forgotten or disappear as if it never happened?

HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

After a difficult period in our lives, we want to return to the way things were before our troubles began. We retrace our steps to gain a sense that we are right with the world once again, But, when we return to our "old habits" , we find that there are still responsibilities waiting for us---relationships to be renewed and protected. or debts to be paid. Is there something-- a connection, a vision, even a ritual-- that we have always taken with us that we can now use to restore our lives?

RABBI'S MESSAGE

Dear OZ family,

Greetings from Israel. I’m very happy to announce that the newest member of our family carries  my father’s name. Renee’s father is Tsvi, my father’s first name, so the baby’s full name is Menachem Mendel, my father’s second and third name.

Menachem Mendel’s  older brother is named Schneur and his sister is named Chaya, so Moshe and Renee get a lifetime membership in the local Chabad  house.

This is the 4th time in less than 3 years that my family has had the Zechus of carrying on my father’s memory, a very appropriate reward for a sole survivor of a large family who lived to see his parents’ names and that of every sibling given in the family he created from the ashes.

We were at the Ramot mall yesterday with our grandchildren and the Head of Security opened up a glass box that is reserved for emergency announcements such as a missing child or a fire. He announced Mincha in 5 minutes in the mall.

Every mall has a Beis Medrash and every store has a Mezuzah. The buses say Shabbat Shalom today, and bus stops have Tzedaka boxes. 30 bikes in my daughter’s city are left along a gate overnight, all unlocked. A lost and found box at the entrance of a park has a pile of clothes, toys, and sundries waiting for their owner to claim them. These are all “only in Israel” cases.
