Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blog

  • We human beings are, I believe, wired for seeking transcendence--wired to grow toward what is higher. As children we naturally look up to adults and seek to become adults ourselves. Actually, growing up is something we continue to do all of our lives--if we are lucky and motivated to do so. As people , we seek, individually and in groups, not only greater knowledge of our world but also greater control of it. To a great extent, modernity is built on this idea. Is there a danger of hubris [excessive pride or self-confidence] in doing this? Is it right for us to seek " to be as gods"? An old question worth asking again and again.
  • Reflections on the Tower of Babel story Genesis 11:1-9

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • Is there anything we would be better off not knowing? Most often what we know allows us to successfully navigate  our life world. We "learn" how to avoid dangers and mistakes. By increasing our knowledge we are able to achieve our goals. This is "practical knowledge" and we need it. Even in paradise one has to know how to care for the trees and gather in the fruit.  In so far as practice is connected to theory, the better theoretical understanding we possess, the more sophisticated our technology and usually the greater our opportunities. We are certainly, then not better off not having either practical or theoretical knowledge.
  • Let's expand the question a bit. What about "moral knowledge" or "knowledge of values", assuming that either of them exists independent of the theoretical and/or practical knowledge necessary to get on comfortably in our lives? Not an easy question. If we consider only our physical and psychological well being, we might not need more than a well ordered theory-driven sense of our emotions, thoughts, desires and priorities.  However,  we might think that there is something fundamentally "human" about understanding and knowledge. To be human is to inquire, to seek to know, to seek to understand the things, processes, values, etc that make up our world.  Then, we would say that we are  more truly ourselves if we have knowledge and less ourselves as full persons if we are ignorant.
  • Finally, to return to our original question: In a perfect world, would it matter how much we knew?
  • Are there truths that  it  is  better not to know? And, to the extent that knowledge connects us to " reality", are there persons, places and things that we are better off not knowing, not being connected to---however pleasant and satisfying we might find them?
  • Reflections on Genesis 2:15-17

HASHKAMA MINYAN - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB
  • Profound religious experience creates/allows a series of interconnecting psycho-spiritual processes that are often focused around a problem. We struggle to find ways for the different elements of the processes to work together synthetically.  For example, as we work through the Haggadah, we might ask: What does redemption mean? to  me? to us? We might begin to think about what " enslaves" us and what might free us and help us move beyond our spiritual and psychological limits.  Throughout our seder,  the Haggadah is "the place"  in which we ask : What would it mean for us to be free?
  • As we succeed in forming unified answers to our questions, , we experience a type of catharsis, even deliverance. We have moments of deep comprehension and commitment, moments of  transition toward greater freedom. Given this way of understanding religious/spiritual experience, we may say that, at a Pesach Seder, the participants  seek to get past sharing interesting ideas and become able to say: I'm experiencing multiple personal "transitions" that are here and now resulting in personal transformations, movements toward being free.  These liberating transformations are an important part of what makes us human.
  • Reflections on the Passover Haggadah

Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  •
Redemption means liberation from  being the captive of a harmful, painful, or distressing situation. It also suggests finding one's proper place in the world. We may be redeemed as an individual, as a family, as a People, as a nation, even as a universe. The story of both liberation and finding one's place unites the past, the present and the future. It is a narrative at once both physical and spiritual, subjective and objective, sacred and profane.   The redeeming moment is an instant in which things will either come together or explode. Once we have been redeemed, we seek to relive that moment, returning again and again to it ---remembering it, celebrating it, understanding it. But it eludes our grasp and we know that we will  have to return.

Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • How many universes do we inhabit? To be sure, there is the one we usually wake up to, the world of sense and matter, feeling and thought-- a world of past, present and future. Maybe there are also worlds with hidden meaning, or even  "spiritual universes" , beyond time and space, existing at higher levels, even intersecting with our own. There were cosmologists who believed in an infinite number of universes. Many traditionally religious people believe that there are at least two worlds--our own and the one we go to when we die. And if there are multiple realities,  maybe an act in one of them has significant consequences , for ill or for good, in another? What do you think?

Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • Most of us grow up wanting to please others. After all, our parents, our caregivers, our teachers and adults in general make sure that we get on in life. When  they think well of us, our life is easier.  Then, sometimes, the world  presents a serious psychological, moral or spiritual challenge, one where we have to decide what our life is really about and what serious personal risks to run in facing up to what is demanded of us. Others may urge and inspire us but in the end, we become truly ourselves when, as free persons,  we take charge of our responsibilities. Then, we know why we are here.
  • Reflections on the Biblical book of Esther

Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • As our lives change, we are always saying good bye to the old and welcoming in the new--good bye to childhood and schooling, good bye to the old job and to lost relationships, good bye to mistakes, bad deeds and failures. However good or necessary our past was, we still want to leave behind its costs and limits. We want to correct our errors, grow as people and achieve more without the burden of our limits and wrongdoing, intentional or otherwise. How do we do this? What actions or ceremonies facilitate these transitions, lessen the ongoing negative costs and open the door to new possibilities?
  • Reflections on the opening sections of Leviticus

Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • As humans, we search for the spiritual both privately, as individuals and families, and also publicly, in communities and as a People.  As a public community, we reach out from our sacred center- the imagined place" that we believe binds us all together. We build "temples" .As private individuals, or small groups, however, we come from a place within us. We often seek a tangible external representation of that place. We build our own private altars. Ask yourself: When, how and with which people do you seek transcendent spiritual connection?  Has this changed over the course of your life?  If so, why has it changed?
  • Reflections on Exodus 20 and 27, as well as other places in which building altars is mentioned.
