Welcome: Yossi Baumol - Shalosh Seudos Scholar in Residence

Yossi Baumol was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, graduated from Torah Vodaath High School, studied for many years under Rabbi Tuvia Goldstein zt"l at Yeshiva Emek Halacha in New York, studied briefly at Lakewood Yeshiva in New Jersey and received a degree in Philosophy and English Literature from Brooklyn College. He went on Aliyah in 1977 and has lived in Efrat in Gush Etzion since 1983.Yossi has 9 children and dozens of grandchildren all living in the area of Judea, south of Jerusalem whom he raised with his wife Sarah (Wagner) who heads the Daf HaYomi program for women at MaTan. Yossi has a rich history of connecting Jews around the world to some of the foremost Religious Zionist projects in Israel, serving as director of Ateret Cohanim for 14 years, head of the Hebron Fund for 6 years as well as head of American Friends of Sderot for 4 years before joining Makor Chaim in Kfar Etzion in April 2015 to head up the Dept. of Development spearheading the effort to build the new campus in memory of Naftali, Gilad & Eyal hy"d.

In addition, in most situations, knowledge is power. But why we want power makes all the difference in evaluating our search for knowledge. And can we always be sure of our motivations in seeking knowledge and power? All in all, we can't stop trying to understand our world and act effectively in it, but we need to be very very circumspect about our motivations.

As Rabbis we are apolitical, and it’s not our place to endorse a specific candidate. But it is our responsibility to care for our community. And this election could have an enormous impact on our community, our synagogues, and our schools. Voting is a civic responsibility and opportunity, and we urge you to vote in this election.

How much control over our lives and our world do we need? If we reduce the size and scope of our world, we can gain control over much of it. Expanding our life and our world, while more exciting and satisfying, usually means accepting that we have to surrender control over parts, often important parts, of our reality-- too much to watch, too far to see, too filled with possibilities to always run according to plan. And where does human vulnerability fit into our search for control? Or, death, over which we ultimately have no control? Do our rituals that address vulnerability and death help us to control them or to face them? At our best, I believe, despite the limits on our ability to control our world, we seek the expanding fullness of life.

“And we were in our sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” The Kotzker Rebbe said that the spies’ mistake was in the words “and so we were in their sight”; that is, it shouldn’t bother a person how others view him. One can never rest if his/her self-esteem is dependent on others’ approval. Keep your focus on doing what is right and proper and work on mastering your self-image (being ever cognizant of the fact your intrinsic value as being created in Hashem’s image) regardless of how others view you. The Chofetz Chaim said, “when you view yourself as inferior, you will assume that others also view you as inferior; but the truth could well be that the other person views you in a much higher manner”.

Why was the mission of the spies in this week’s Parsha so disastrous, whereas the mission of the spies sent by Joshua was so successful? The former went to see whether the land was conquerable. Although G-d had assured them that they would receive the land, they did not have trust in Him, and they deliberated whether or not the Divine word was reliable. The latter, on the other hand, had no doubt about their ultimate triumph. Their mission was merely to determine the best method for entering the land (i.e., how to implement G-d’s will). If one questions whether or not to obey the Divine will, there will be no scarcity of reasons why not to do so. If, however, one is determined to follow G-d’s instructions and seeks only how one can best do so, one’s efforts will be blessed with success.

24TH PRECINCT & CSS APPRECIATION

Shalom friends,

So much of what we do in Shul involves praise and gratitude. I hope you will join with me this Shabbos morning as we honor our local Police Precinct. We will be joined by members of the 24* as well as NYPD officers from around NYC.

I don't need to tell you that the police and other first responders are a critical link in keeping us safe - especially in an environment which has become more and more volatile recently. We can never know what a word or encouragement and an open hand means for any essential worker.

As I always say "a smile is a small curve that can set a lot of things straight."

Have you ever had a moment which you might describe as "the heavens opened and I knew what I had to do"? It was a kind of "revelation" and you acted on it. Has it always worked out for the best? Perhaps, most of the time it has but ,then, sometimes it hasn't. We may feel that we " have" to do something, we do it and then , upon reflection, we see that there were better options that we simply failed to see because we were carried away by the sheer power of that moment when we felt as if the heavens opened for us. We don't want to simply make up our own world, so we learn to share our insights with others. We see what they think.. We study the wisdom that we have inherited. We try to understand that wisdom and see if it confirms what we have experienced. At the end of the day, however, we are responsible for our own lives and must choose what we are to do. These moments when the heavens open are a great blessing--especially if we are able to work together with others to understand what they mean.

For many rabbinic thinkers, the classical Jewish belief in a Creator of the world/universe reinforces a social ethic of human mutuality and support, as well as encouraging a special concern for protecting and sustaining our environment, the natural world. They connect the deliberate cessation of most agricultural activity every seven years [Shemittah] with all of these three: a Creator, an ethics of mutual support and practical benefits to our environment and the agriculture it sustains. In their minds, a Divine Creator cares for the natural world he has formed and the people he has fashioned.

Perhaps, we should think about the worlds that we create around us, individually and as a society:

Are they built on mutual respect and support, on the value of the people with whom we live?
Are they sustained by a special concern for preserving and protecting our part of our social and natural world?
Do we regularly make space for our own little world to regenerate?

Do we moderns believe in demonic beings, forces, or realms? We do often believe in the dangerous power of acts of profound wickedness and of those that perpetrate them---Hitler, Stalin. Their strength can not be ignored, nor, it seems, can it ever be definitively eradicated. Just when we think that the monster is dead, it rears once again its grotesque and destructive head. At its worst, at its most cynical, this demon mocks and undermines the special value of human life, individually and collectively. And we find that. a part of each of us can become caught up in it. We can end up treating others as being there only or at least primarily, for our individual pleasure or in order to meet our personal needs. But it becomes complicated. If we do not give the devil of narcissism a bit of his due, if we try to totally suppress him, most of us find that he returns with a vengeance, much worse than before. It is worth asking: As individuals, as communities as a society, can or should we "buy off" this part pf who we are, this "realm of the demonic that hides in the corners of our lives? If so, how?

Shlissel Challah (Challahs & Keys or Bagels & Lox!?)

The first Shabbos after Pesach there is a custom to bake Challah with a key ("shlissel") inside or in the shape of a key as a segulah for Parnassah.

In honor of Schlissel Challah, we've asked Rebbetzin Alisa Schwartz to include the recipe for her popular Whole Wheat Honey Challah:

Mix the following in a warm place so that the yeast will poof:
- 6 packets active dry yeast
- 2 tsps sugar
- 4 cups lukewarm water

In another bowl mix:
- 2 cups honey
- 1 tsp salt
- 5 large eggs
- 2 cups vegtable oil
- 8 cups whole wheat flour
- 9 cups bread flour

When yeast is bubbly (poofed) add to mixture and mix dough until it is not sticky

Let dough rise for at least 2-3 hours in a warm place covered.

Then knead the dough and shape and let rise again.

This recipe can be braided or made as pull apart challah.

For shlissel challah either shape the dough into the shape of a key or take a key and cover with parchment paper and stick it into the dough after shaping while rising. Nothing will happen to the key if you bake it in the dough in parchment paper

We create initiation ceremonies that mark our entrance into the special roles that characterize what is meaningful to us---becoming partnered, becoming parents, starting a career, finding a sacred task, etc. But points of entry contain not only great promise. If we get them wrong, they also bring risks and even dangers---the ruined wedding or awful first year, the over anxious new parent, getting off on the wrong foot at the job, misunderstanding who we are in the drama of holy living.We might be be clumsy, anxious and self-involved when we need to be skillful, calm and altruistic. Not easy to do. But, we can't spend our lives hiding in order to be safe. We can't narrow our lives by being overly cautious when offered good possibilities. So we may on our initiation ceremonies to carry us through.

Guest Parsha Point - Rabbi Zelig Pliskin (Growth Through Torah)

When you love wisdom, you will have joy for the wisdom of others. “And Moshe heard and it was good in his eyes.” Sforno comments on this verse: Moshe felt joy upon hearing Aharon’s reasoning. He was pleased that Aharon was correct in his decision. People who have wisdom will derive pleasure when they come up with an original idea or when they find that they are correct in some intellectual matter. But, it is a rare quality to have such a love of wisdom that one derives pleasure when another person comes up with a good idea. What was special about Moshe’s joy was that he himself made an error and Aharon was right. Many people would be upset that they had made a mistake. But not Moshe. He was joyful that his brother had an awareness of truth, even though this meant that he was wrong. Moshe’s love of wisdom should serve as a model to strive for.

Life takes us places, often places we don't plan to stay very long. But somehow we do stay, often longer than we expected. We keep on living in cities, in apartments or in houses that we wanted to leave. We just hold onto jobs or careers or relationships long after we think we should have pulled out.

Why? Are we afraid of the unknown, preferring the devil we know? Do we simply lack an inspiring vision? Do we feel too guilty rejecting places or people or positions? What fears or dullness enslave us "here--whatever the pain and indignity--when we know that we need to be "there"--whatever that may be? And what if we are supposed to be where life has taken us and we just need to be more understanding and creative in making ourselves at home there? There are so many risks in life and there doesn't seem to be a place we can go to know clearly which risks to take.

Whether we stay or we go, we are always betting out lives. Spirituality is sometimes about the search for a hand that will always hold onto us, that will be with us to make sure that we do not have to face the risks and gambles of life alone. So we ask ourselves: Life takes us places but are we on our own?

On the surface, life can often seen almost mathematically structured. The calendar of our days has its own fixed rhythm, its tune following seemingly unchanging patterns. But look a little closer and you see that this order is punctuated by moments of choice and change, by events that mark our freedom from subjugation to a predetermined reality. We note moments of renewal in which we rediscover our creative possibilities. We come to measure our lives from these moments--so many years after finding love, or before a having a professional inspiration. We name times "before X" and "after X". It is the nature of these "x"s that reveals what truly renews us, what makes us "new" Before or after a relationship; before and after specific people; before and after places or ideas or melodies or images, or etc. etc. The power of spirit to renew itself is always breaking through the seeming algorithm of our lives.

Good relationships are based on trust, on a faith in the ongoing commitment of our friends or partners. But faith in fail or falter. Maybe they don't seem to be around when we need them. Or, we misperceive or misunderstand each other or the nature of the relationship. Absence and misperceptions undermine and unbalance our relationship. Then, we do something that reveals the crisis in our relationship. We might seek substitutes, somebody or something else to fill the perceived absence. Or, we might betray the values which ground our relationship. And there is a cost: key symbols of the relationship somehow disappear or are damaged. The wedding ring comes off. Painful or even dangerous consequences emerge and are often seen as retribution for our lack of faithfulness. We cut them off, stop speaking to them or do so only in a distant and often cold tone. We find ourselves asking: Is our relationship so damaged that it is over? or, is there enough love, commitment and shared values remaining to allow us to start again? It seems to em that all this is true not only of our relationships with others but also of our relationship with what is deeply spiritual or even divine.

Views from the Pews - Purim Thoughts from Bezalel Kosofsky

I went on a Torah tour of the Central Park Zoo led by Rabbi Becher on Thanksgiving with Congregation Ohab Zedek. The tour started with a goose drinking grape juice while a fish was making kiddush, a bunny dipping apples in honey, cats wearing Shabbos hats, a bear wearing a kippah on his hair, a fly eating a kosher pizza pie, and a horse playing dreidel of course. In the middle of the tour, I heard a kangaroo speaking Hebrew to fish speaking back in Yiddish and saw a cow shaking a lulav right now. The tour ended with a gopher blowing shofar and a gorilla reading a megillah.

RABBI SCHWARTZ'S PURIM NOTICE

Dear OZ Family,

The year 5781 conflates a number of anomalies that combine to make this a very rare calendrical year. Purim on Erev Shabbos, The 10^th of Teves on Friday, Chanukah all together missing Parshas Miketz, Erev Pesach on Shabbos, Tisha B’Av on Sunday, and the very rare readings for the Haftorahs of Miketz and Tetzave, make all these anomalies a once-in-a-century year.

Please read below for select Purim Halachos and Guidelines, and please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have. Thank you for your resilience in allowing us a responsible reopening during this time.

Parshas Zachor

Some Poskim consider that one may fulfill the reading of Parshat Zachor by hearing the laining on Purim.

Machatzis HaShekel

This Mitzvah can be fulfilled by donating HERE.
Based on the current stock price of silver (which is constantly fluctuating), to fulfill the maximalist opinion of fulfilling this mitzvah, an $18.00 donation will suffice, but “Kol HaMarbeh Harey Zeh Meshubach.”

Purim Mitzvos & Ta’anit Esther

Taanit Esther is Thursday, Feb. 25^th and fasting begins at 5:24am and ends at 6:27pm. We should preferably daven Maariv and hear the Megillah before breaking our fast, but if we have no access to hear the Megillah earlier, then daven Maariv before eating and then join one of the later readings.
This year, you must RSVP to attend our 'in-person' Megillah Readings. There will be social distancing in the Main Shul and limited space in the 'Sukkah.' Please click HERE for evening and morning times.
For those who due to health concerns cannot participate 'in-person', we will host Zoom Megillah Readings on Thursday at 8:30pm and Friday at 11:00am - click HERE for free RSVP. There is a call-in option as well.
Matanos L’evyonim can be fulfilled by donating HERE. This year the need is great, especially in Israel.
Shalach Manos must inlcude at least 2 food items to 1 person. Every year I announce that we should concentrate more on Matanos L’evyonim than on Shalach Manos. This goes doubly for this year. Please exercise discretion in fulfilling this mitzvah.
The Seudas Purim should begin before Midday, and the custom is for it to be dairy so as not to impact on the Shabbos meals.

Please let me know if you can assist with delivering Shalach Manos to some of our homebound seniors and assist them with their shopping or even setting them up for Zoom Megillah Readings.

Special preparations for Pesach will follow as a Shabbos Erev Pesach brings its own special rules. 5781 continues to be an anomalous year in many ways.

Parshas Zachor

This coming Shabbos we will fulfill the Torah law of reading Parshat Zachor. Covid offers us a special challenge, and we will be reading Parshas Zachor at OZ on Shabbos multiple times (Covid Guidelines can be reviewed HERE).

Below are approximations, including Minyan start times. Please come early to ensure you can join on time.

Hashaka Minyan: 7:30am, 8:30am Zachor
'Sukkah' Minyan: 8:30am, 9:30am Zachor (Social Hall depending on weather, RSVP required by clicking HERE)
Youth Groups at 10:30am in Sukkah
Main Minyan: 9:15am, 10:20am Zachor
Additional Zachor Readings in Main Shul: 11:15am & 5:20pm

If you are not able to make it to Shul, you may read the verses of Parshat Zachor from a Chumash at home, preferably while standing. The verses are Devarim 25:17-19.

Office Update

Over the last weekend a burst pipe in the back of the Social Hall leaked into our main office. The heavy snowfall largely prevented us from getting rapid assistance, but thankfully our staff quickly salvaged and cleaned what they could. Equipment was saturated, files were soaked, and the wall and carpet are in the process of being removed and replaced as we work with our insurance and mold mitigation companies. We appreciate your patience as we get the phones, computers, systems, and other items up and running.

Systems of law not only govern human behavior but also express values and commitments.

The law written in the book of Exodus in the Hebrew Bible is no exception.

Here are some of its most important values and commitments.

Seek to show a generosity of spirit in caring for the vulnerable.
Use your foresight and ability to control material reality to anticipate difficulties and dangers and then take precautions.
Difficult deals must sometimes be made in order handle the challenges of a physically, economically and socially imperfect world.
Be steadfast and faithful in your commitment to G'd.
Find ways to express that commitment to G'd both privately and publicly.

A few questions to think about :

Are any of these also ethical or religious values worthy of commitment independent of a system of law?
Do we compromise them by building them into legal systems that use force?
Is it important for a people to have a system of law that, in addition to controlling the use of force and violence, also expresses its ethical or religious values?
If yes, why?

When we confront such evil, what are we, what might we or what should we seek, when we actually have the power to do so? Vengeance? Justice? Restitution and reparations? Education and/or re-education toward true principles? Saving the good by rescuing the victims of evil ?Reconciliation? Humanity has seen all of these, sometimes separately and sometimes jointly.

Making it personal: Do any of these apply to evil done even in the smaller individual, familial, social or communal world in which we live? If so, when and how?
