- Many activities create material culture. There are the manifold actions involved in hunting and gathering, in agriculture, in the construction of houses, cities and roads and the entire technology of the contemporary world. Is there a unity or unifying power behind or within the material culture that serves as a basis for the scientific and spiritual achievements of humanity? If we suspended material culture creating for one day, a kind of Sabbath, would all categories of such "work" be seen as equally important within some underlying unity that binds all categories together?
- Reflections based on Exodus 35:2-3 and Shabbat 70a in the Babylonian Talmud.

When we are doing well in life, measuring our success [ counting resources and wealth, surveying our professional achievements, etc. ] may be very reassuring and even celebratory. Does this makes sense? While we are not responsible for our natural endowments or for the circumstances into which we are born, we can take some credit for our achievements due to the use that we have made of the gifts of our birth. Nonetheless, there is the risk that we will become arrogant, celebrating ourselves as"better" than others in a way that denigrates them. Also, the knowledge of our success may invite jealousy. Some may wish that our fortunes change and that we be laid as low as we now are high. So, we ask: How much of all the ups and downs of our condition is due to ourselves? to others? to the nature of the world? to G-d?

We wear different types of clothing--daily work clothes, casual outfits for relaxation, formal attire for special occasions, even items that mark moments of spiritual meaning such as a talit, a kittle, a wedding dress and veil, etc. Clothes relate to what we are doing and its meaning. They may come with the role that we are playing or our part in the task at hand----police, medical or military uniforms, for example. Why not think about your own ways of dressing. What messages are you sending? Does what you wear put you at risk? Does it protect you? Is it seen as special or as transporting you to special spiritual places?

Where does G-d dwell ? The Kotzger rebbe famously said " Wherever we let Him in." Although the human heart is a dwelling place for the Divine, most human societies build "houses" and invite Him in. It's very hard for people to keep faith with invisible beings. hence places of worship and rituals that join communities of faith together , engage the realm of the invisible, etc. These places-temples, churches, synagogues, mosques--are "open to the infinite", even if they cannot contain it. Is it wrong, then, if we ask ourselves which physical spaces provide us with the space for G'd to enter? Does this distract us from opening our hearts?

- Is there anything spiritual in law? Clearly, the Hebrew Bible [TaNaCH] thinks so. One meaning of encountering the Divine is expressed in teaching through law/rules. Of course, there is more --narrative, poetry, theology, even history and cosmology. But, the Sinai encounter includes , even focuses its concern on, how G-d wants people to live/act/behave both individually and as groups.
- The Jewish system of law [halakha] , while extensive ,is not however totalitarian and leaves most of our time for us to structure. And, of course, since laws do not interpret or apply themselves, our personal lives, and the life of our communities, are relatively diverse. This makes living a life governed by Divine law complicated.
- The spiritual life, Jewish or otherwise, then finds its expression in part in law [rules and rituals]. Among all the many possibilities for how humans should live, spiritual vision partially marks out a conception of those to be sought out and those to be avoided. In short, our spiritual commitment to [law] action must be guided by/rooted in our understanding of our highest values. Once again: this makes living a life governed by Divine law complicated.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
- In our world of so many different and opposite kinds of things, is there an underlying unity? For the Greeks, maybe water, maybe matter, or maybe mind. Or, for the more mystically inclined, the creative, world-ordering presence of the Divine. In our own lives as well we may ask: Is there any way to bring together our many different wants, goals, drives, interests, theories and perceptions? Is there somehow a "unity", a unifying task, purpose or goal to our existence? Such unity seems to require a conjunction of opposites--different things somehow paradoxically actually being the same. And it is not not very easy for us to see how even the Creator of the world would be able to achieve such a joining of opposites. How is it, then, that we seem to live in one world and in many worlds all at the same time?

Hashkama Minyan | Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
- Despite the negative consequences of our mistakes, we can, unfortunately, persist in making them over and over again. Both in our personal relationships and in our work life, we may walk ourselves into the same wall repeatedly, each time hurting ourselves and others. Worse, we may repeat our errors even after we have realized that we make them and even sworn to stop doing so. Often, only a profound change in both our heart and our mind will save us. The big question is : How do we make this change?

Hashkama Minyan | Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
- We can sometimes understand why we have to suffer through tough times. Either we have made a serious mistake and these pains are the consequences, or we can see that the demands made on us by our difficulties will improve us as human beings---better understanding, greater knowledges, more sensitive to the pain of others, more resilient, etc. But, not all such situations can be explained, or justified. They must simply be endured. In short, life sometimes makes moral sense and sometimes doesn't. This raises the question: Do you think that in the long run human life, with all of its ethical demands, its successes, its failures as well as its unexplained and unearned pains, makes moral sense?

Hashkama Minyan | Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
- We all know the cliche: Life is a journey. We are going on a path, a way. And we know the Frost line: "I took the one less travelled by and that made all the difference". But, is that how we actually live--with a direction and a way to a goal? Maybe we are often looking for a good place to be and wanting to just stay there. How do we really feel about taking the unexpected, even, problematic road? Will it mean betting what we can't afford to lose? To be sure, the well lived life is guided by vision and rooted in courage. Sometimes, the fear and apprehension that comes with the excitement of taking the risks of life are the only thing makes us feel confident that we are going on a way of deep exploration and expansion.

- Living means exercising power.....the power to build, to preserve and to heal; the power to hurt, to tear down and to destroy. The trick is knowing where, when, why and how to exercise our energy and force. " Not acting" too uses force, since it allows those ready to use their power, for good or for evil, to actually do so. And, even if our own intentions are "pure", we sometimes find ourselves partnering with those with questionable motives. Violence of is an evil; sometimes, however, it is the lesser of two evils. But, should we say that the harmful use of violence, even when used to stop greater evil, should never be celebrated or leave us feeling good?

- We sometimes make serious changes in the direction of our life, When we do so, we may be concerned that we will be abandoning what we have already achieved, and perhaps even end up in a worse situation. Of course, we hope to continue to rely on our personal strengths or on any surrounding forces that have supported us thus far. But we worry that they might somehow disappear or abandon us. Worse, there may be something self-serving and immoral about making this change. And, where :family" is involved, are we betraying them by doing this? We ask ourselves: Will this change cut us off from the very sources of power and understanding that have brought us to where we are? In search of answers at such pivotal life moments, we seek out wisdom, knowledge, support and guidance from the most profound spiritual sources with which we can connect. Have you ever done this? How did it go?

There are moments when all the forces at work in the challenging moments of our life seem about to either explode, and destroy everything, or come together and liberate us. We find ourselves caught between, on the one hand, an inability to tolerate the strain as things are about to fall apart and, on the other hand, celebration of the merging of the opposing forces that have been at work. The first brings tears of pain while the second brings tears of joy. If only we knew, at these powerful moments, what was really going on. Or, better, if only at these moments, the explosion and the coming together could happen as one,

Important events in our life often endow the places they occurred with profound meaning. Think of the house, or apartment, where you grew up. Remember your "home town'', or where you went to university or got your first real job. See in your mind, the place where you fell in love or found God. All these places, and many more, are the site of the challenges and the promises of your life. . Have you since returned to them? What was it like? Are there places that you have not revisited but feel the need to do so? Why? Do you want to draw strength from what happened there? to fix what went wrong there? to realize , or perhaps even claim/reclaim what was made possible there? Gather up all these important places now in your mind and own the depth of your experience and the richness of their promise. Then, think of what you now need to do

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
- Not every place and not every situation is right for us. Sometimes, places and cultures make too many demands on us morally and spiritually. Others, too few. We need to live in an environment--physical, social, political, moral, esthetic and religious--that supports our development, that pushes us just enough to bring us to become better, but not so much that we fail, or are discouraged, worn out and then give up. We need to be in places that fit "who we are"--our character, and capabilities as well as our limits.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
- People we care about die. How do we say goodbye to those we love, to the family, friends and teachers with whom we have spent an important part of our lives? As a start, we gratefully appreciate the moral and spiritual quality of their lives . And how they helped makes us who we are. We do this both in our own minds and by sharing stories about them with others. Still, we know that in order to go on with our own lives, we have to put away what remains of their physical presence . We do so and then we can grieve. But, when possible, , we put it where we can find it and perhaps, when we visit it there, reconnect again with them on a deeper level.
- Reflections on Genesis 23.

Each life is distinctive, having its own pattern and often defined by a set of major events and experiences. The most satisfying and engaging opportunities and tasks of our existence continually prod us to make and remake our way of living. To say the least, this can be very taxing. Are we allowed to "take a brief vacation" ? What would it cost us to just coast for a bit? What would it cost those we meet, those we work with, those we love and care for?

Even radical changes in our lives may still leave places and people as a basis to start anew. Something of the past survives, enabling us to begin again. We lost the job and the connections, but our skills and knowledge base remain. Our relationship dissolves in anger, frustration and regret but what we learned through it is not gone. Our body deteriorates physically but our resilience and coping ability are there to carry us through. And, as we emerge from a life "catastrophe", we find new footing and get under way again.

Shalom!
Shana Tova!
Below you will find your Yom Kippur Seat Assignment (if applicable), Yom Kippur Schedule (including an additional Zoom Hataras Nedarim), and some Sukkos information.
- If you ordered a Lulav with OZ, please check your email for distribution information. If you did not order with OZ, do not take a Lulav from the Shul - please patronize West Side Judaica.
- This year, like last, we will offer 'Quick Kiddushes' through out Sukkos Yom Tov days for members and guests to make a 'Leshev (not Linger)' followed by table reservations (bring your own food) - please RSVP at www.OZNY.org/Sukkos.
If you registered for Yom Kippur Services, your seat assignment(s) will be listed here:
[seat_assignments]
- Some seat assignments may have changed from Rosh Hashana
- If you do not see an assignment or think there is a mistake, please do not hesitate to contact us office@ozny.org.
- Signage will also be placed at the entrances of the Main Shul and with the Gabbaim at each Minyan.
- Due to demand, we will host a participant-led Zoom Hataras Nedarim at 5:00pm - click here for link: www.OZNY.org/Event/Nedarim5782
- While the 8:00am Sukkah Minyan has closed out, those who would want more distancing with an expedited service are welcome to join the Vasikin Minyan at 6:15am. The Main Minyan will start at 9:20am. Both the Sukkah and Vasikin minyan will start at 'Nishmas.'
- Please remember that due to both an increase of the number of attendees and in the number of hours spent in shul, all participants are required to wear masks in all minyanim.
- Do not forget to register your children for the Yom Kippur Youth Program - https://www.ozny.org/event/YouthKippur2021. This is not a 'drop-off' program - parents must have seats reserved at OZ.
- It's not too late to join the Kol Nidrei Appeal or RSVP for Seats, please do so now at www.OZNY.org/HighHolidays!

Indeed, we are always looking to improve and welcome constructive suggestions and feedback.
Wishing you a Shana Tova!

- Each generation inherits the world from the generation before it. As individuals too, we inherit the responsibilities of those who came before us. Sometimes, there is even a moment in which we feel appointed to these tasks. And, at those moments, as we sense those before us passing away, we seek the inspiration that continuing the "mission" requires.
- We want to be inspired. This may not happen as explicitly as we might like, but somehow the previous generation may find a way to encourage us. Knowing that my father was dying, I made what both of us knew was my last visit. Talking about his imminent death, my father said " I am at peace with it. I have had an interesting life.". Then he paused, looked me in the eye and said " Come to think of it, you have an interesting life too. "
