Shalom!

Shana Tova!

Below you will find your Yom Kippur Seat Assignment (if applicable), Yom Kippur Schedule (including an additional Zoom Hataras Nedarim), and some Sukkos information.

  • If you ordered a Lulav with OZ, please check your email for distribution information. If you did not order with OZ, do not take a Lulav from the Shul - please patronize West Side Judaica.
  • This year, like last, we will offer 'Quick Kiddushes' through out Sukkos Yom Tov days for members and guests to make a 'Leshev (not Linger)' followed by table reservations (bring your own food) - please RSVP at www.OZNY.org/Sukkos

If you registered for Yom Kippur Services, your seat assignment(s) will be listed here:
[seat_assignments]

  • Some seat assignments may have changed from Rosh Hashana
  • If you do not see an assignment or think there is a mistake, please do not hesitate to contact us office@ozny.org.
  • Signage will also be placed at the entrances of the Main Shul and with the Gabbaim at each Minyan.
  • Due to demand, we will host a participant-led Zoom Hataras Nedarim at 5:00pm - click here for link: www.OZNY.org/Event/Nedarim5782
  • While the 8:00am Sukkah Minyan has closed out, those who would want more distancing with an expedited service are welcome to join the Vasikin Minyan at 6:15am. The Main Minyan will start at 9:20am. Both the Sukkah and Vasikin minyan will start at 'Nishmas.'
  • Please remember that due to both an increase of the number of attendees and in the number of hours spent in shul, all participants are required to wear masks in all minyanim.
  • Do not forget to register your children for the Yom Kippur Youth Program - https://www.ozny.org/event/YouthKippur2021. This is not a 'drop-off' program - parents must have seats reserved at OZ.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • Each generation inherits the world from the generation before it. As individuals too, we inherit the responsibilities of those who came before us. Sometimes, there is even a moment in which we feel appointed to these tasks. And, at those moments, as we sense those before us passing away, we seek the inspiration that continuing the "mission" requires.
  • We want to be inspired. This may not happen as explicitly as we might like, but somehow the previous generation may find a way to encourage us. Knowing that my father was dying, I made what both of us knew was my last visit. Talking about his imminent death, my father said " I am at peace with it. I have had an interesting life.". Then he paused, looked me in the eye and said " Come to think of it, you have an interesting life too. "
  • Reflections on Deuteronomy 31:14 and Rashi's commentary on it

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • On the Jewish New Year,  Jews sound the shofar, a ram's horn.  Its blasting wordless sound is meant to  wake us up. Its sound without words is both empty and also filled with unarticulated possibilities.  As we hear the shofar, we are invited to imagine a world where both the possibilities of the moment of creation and the promises of history find their fulfillment and expression in a redemptive, messianic, vision.
  • We personally can also envision what our  own world might become. We imagine leaving behind the limits of our worst habits, escaping the uninspired repeated patterns of our lives that make us feel safe but sometimes bore us half to death.  The shofar's blast can awaken within us the best, most creative and satisfying possibilities of our own lives. It can make them  seem real again. We see what we—our relationships and our work—can become.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • We try hard not to be judgmental, but,  like it or not , we are always judging actions, situations and people. We just can't avoid it. Judging fairly isn't easy.  High position, impressive intellect, having gone to the right schools, being wealthy, even good looks sometimes sorely tempt us to judge favorably even when the evidence says otherwise. And vice versa. We can be nudged toward an unfavorable judgment of people who seem to be shleppers, not too bright, don't seem "cool" ,etc.  when this is not really justified. The hard question is: How exactly do we avoid making wrong judgments of actions, situations and people?

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • Through science and our own experience, we understand much of our daily world. But we don't have certainty or even clarity about many of our most important life questions---relationships,  jobs and career, religion and spirituality. The certainty that comes with moments of  Divine revelation is just not a part of today's world.  Maybe we should be wary of those who seem to claim an almost prophetic personal  certainty about what is going to happen and how we should be living our lives. Even when we are navigating by faith, and can not be entirely sure how to go forward, we can, at least, avoid false prophets.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • The wisdom we seek is the wisdom that teaches us how to live the good life. We turn to the sources of knowledge--sacred texts, reason, experience-- to suggest possibilities and then mark out which we should do and which we must avoid. We do not wait for life problems to occur before we think carefully about how to  live well.  Since acting on our understanding  confirms the value of our thoughtful search for the good life, we don't miss a chance to do something worthwhile even before it can be developed fully.
  • Reflections on Deuteronomy 4: 41 and the commentary of  Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • Learning to ask the right questions is so important in life. It sometimes requires as much courage as it does curiosity. Our general orientation works most of the time to get us around in life. But there are always missing pieces. If we choose, we can ignore them and we'll probably be alright, But if we want a fuller life we have to risk asking about the gaps in our knowledge but also accept that there are some things we will never know.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • A reminder about a widely accepted truth: Is seeking knowledge always a good thing?  Many of us would say that this depends on why we seek it.  Investigation, experimentation, theory construction and text interpretation always take place within the context of our interests, purposes and goals.  In addition, in most situations, knowledge is power. But why  we want power makes all the difference in evaluating our search for knowledge. And can we always be sure of our motivations in seeking knowledge and power? All in all, we can't stop trying to understand our world and act effectively in it, but we need to be very very circumspect about our motivations.

Dear friends,

We are proud to join together with our rabbinic colleagues in urging you to vote in the upcoming primaries on June 22, 2021.

The importance of ensuring strong government leadership in New York City for the next four years cannot be overstated, especially in light of the very difficult period the city has endured since the pandemic struck. We cannot stand on the sidelines. Every vote counts, and our community can make a difference.

As Rabbis we are apolitical, and it’s not our place to endorse a specific candidate. But it is our responsibility to care for our community. And this election could have an enormous impact on our community, our synagogues, and our schools. Voting is a civic responsibility and opportunity, and we urge you to vote in this election.

This year we are tasked to rank our choices. Selecting more than one candidate will enable you to have your vote weigh in more than if you had voted for a single candidate. Click here to learn about ranked voting.

Starting this weekend, you can vote early, and early voting runs from June 12th – 20th. Click here to find your early voting site. If you will be away on June 22nd, click here to get your vote-by-mail ballot.

Sincerely,

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • How much control over our lives and our world do we need? If we reduce the size and scope of our world, we can gain control over much of it. Expanding our life and our world, while more exciting and satisfying, usually means accepting that we have to surrender control over parts, often important parts, of our reality-- too much to watch, too far to see, too filled with possibilities to always run according to plan. And where does human vulnerability fit into our search for control? Or, death, over which we ultimately have no control? Do our rituals that address vulnerability and death help us to control them or to face them? At our best, I believe, despite the limits on our ability to control our world, we seek the expanding fullness of life.

Starting this weekend, you can vote early, and early voting runs from June 12th – 20th. Click here to find your early voting site. If you will be away on June 22nd, click here to get your vote-by-mail ballot.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

  • Wealth is a blessing. It can provide care and security for those we love. It can help feed, house and provide medical care for the poor and those in need. But it carries risks as well. It can distract us  from living lives of transcendent value.  It might make us feel that we are better than others or  that we are  more deserving of social or political power, It can even undermine our motivation to work and achieve.  As Solomon noted: "Here is a grave evil I have observed under the sun: riches hoarded by their owner to his misfortune" {Ecclesiastes 5:12], I grant you that I have said nothing profound. Still,  sometimes a simple truth is worth recollecting and remembering. [Derived from rabbinic Reflections on Numbers 16:1]

New Learning Opportunity

DIVREI TORAH

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb
  • Growing up means learning to live on our own--make our own decisions and choices, deal with the demands of life, find a sense of meaning for ourselves. And yet, if we have a strong web of family, friendship and community relationships, then we do not actually  live on our own. Our family, friends, and community are a part of what we choose and decide, how we meet the challenges of life and  the meaning that we find in our lives. In this sense, "growing up" means learning how to be. a part of the important relationships in our world- how to navigate and negotiate them.  Much the same may be true of our relationship to spiritual transcendence. It is in relationship with the divine that we make our important choices, find meaning in our world and meet life's challenges. [Based on reflections on Numbers 13:1]

Realize your Own Value as a Person - Rabbi Zelig Pliskin, Growth Through Torah

  • “And we were in our sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.” The Kotzker Rebbe said that the spies’ mistake was in the words “and so we were in their sight”; that is, it shouldn’t bother a person how others view him. One can never rest if his/her self-esteem is dependent on others’ approval. Keep your focus on doing what is right and proper and work on mastering your self-image (being ever cognizant of the fact your intrinsic value as being created in Hashem’s image) regardless of how others view you. The Chofetz Chaim said, “when you view yourself as inferior, you will assume that others also view you as inferior; but the truth could well be that the other person views you in a much higher manner”.

Not “If” But “How” - Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twersky z'l, Living Each Week

  • Why was the mission of the spies in this week’s Parsha so disastrous, whereas the mission of the spies sent by Joshua was so successful? The former went to see whether the land was conquerable. Although G-d had assured them that they would receive the land, they did not have trust in Him, and they deliberated whether or not the Divine word was reliable. The latter, on the other hand, had no doubt about their ultimate triumph. Their mission was merely to determine the best method for entering the land (i.e., how to implement G-d’s will). If one questions whether or not to obey the Divine will, there will be no scarcity of reasons why not to do so. If, however, one is determined to follow G-d’s instructions and seeks only how one can best do so, one’s efforts will be blessed with success.
