WEST SIDE ERUV CAMPAIGN

It's Down to The Wire!

The Manhattan Eruv began in 1999 as a local community project for the Upper West Side, but it eventually expanded to include most of the borough of Manhattan.

Obviously an essential need for residents and their families, the Eruv is also used by the many patients of the local hospitals, and their loved ones.

The entire Eruv is checked and maintained weekly, and a website (eruv.nyc) posts real-time status updates.

We completely rely on the community's support.

Please, help this vital project continue.

Do you ever think there is some greater power paying attention to what is happening here in our "earthly" world? When we wrestle with negative, evil forces that seem too great for us to control or destroy, we can choose to believe that there is a greater force in our lives on which we can depend. This is true for resistance to social, political, or personal moral evils. Think of Gandhi, the American civil rights movement, or Alcoholics Anonymous. Such a commitment gives us the strength to move forward. Can it be demonstrated? Perhaps not, but from a pragmatic point of view,  trusting in providence helps us take the other steps necessary to resist the great and small evils that we encounter in our lives.


Ask yourself: How would your life be [or is] different if [or when] you rely on "Divine power" or "providence"?

RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

Does the story of human history have a conclusion, and what might that conclusion be if it does? Perhaps all things--our plans, our tasks, our ideals- come together, and our work here is done. Or, may we think of the idea of an end to human history as an image or idea that we approach but never actually reach? We may expand the scope of our question. Is there somewhere, in reality, a place or a point at which the life or history of a human group--a clan, a tribe, a people, a country, or a nation--forms a final unity, or are we always "on the road," or simply nowhere at all?  Life often seems too complex, too filled with ambiguity,  to have a single final point or goal.  Even on an individual level, we struggle to  imagine " pulling it all together."   How can we even contemplate such an "end" for humanity? But it might feel satisfying and reassuring if we could. Are there no prophets or seers who can help us see what " the long run" looks like? 

Ask yourself: Do you see your life going somewhere? Is your life more than a journey without a goal? Do you see yourself as a part of some larger group that has a world-transforming mission? If so, what is that mission? 

Reflections on Genesis 49:1 & rabbinic commentary 

1. Rashi
ואגידה לכם THAT I MAY TELL YOU — He wished to reveal to them the end of Israel’s exile, but the Shechinah departed from him and he began to speak of other things (Genesis Rabbah 98:2).

2. Ibn Ezra
THAT WHICH SHALL BEFALL YOU. Prophecies foretelling that which shall befall you in the future. Those who base themselves on Scripture’s closing remark....and conclude that they (Jacob’s words) are blessings, err.1....For if it were so, where are the blessings of Reuben, Simeon, and Levi?... The way to understand this is that their father spoke unto them and blessed them is as follows: and this (v. 3-27) is what their father spoke unto them through prophecy, after which he blessed them. Scripture omits the blessings.

3. Ramban
AT THE END OF DAYS. These are the days of the Messiah...our Rabbis have said [Pesachim 56a]. that Jacob wished to reveal the end of Israel’s exile, but the Shechinah (the Divine Presence) departed from him. Thus in the opinion of all scholars, the end of days is a reference to the days of the Messiah.

4. Sforno
באחרית הימים, at the end of the period allocated to life on earth as we know it. Yaakov speaks of the arrival of the Messiah which will signify the end of the existence of the nations that oppose G’d, and the Kingdom of G’d on earth.


5. Baal HaTurim
Then Yaakov called for his sons: He sought to reveal the appointed time for the end, but it became concealed from him (Pesachim 56a.) Yaakov asks, "Perhaps there is sin (חטא) among you?" They said, "No if you examine our names, you will not find the letters ח or ט in them. Then he said unto them, "Arise, there is also no ק or ץ letters (end) in them.

RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

If we want to participate in society,  we can't help but be concerned about our appearance.  When, however,  we are fascinated or entranced by how we look, we might get lost in the kind of narcissism that can lead to seeing others as there simply as props in our drama or as our audience. Then, our sense of entitlement expands. We might begin to think: Surely someone so attractive deserves success and an easy life. 

Even when we do overcome such "childish" ideas, we still might be tempted to think that, if we are " good people," we surely deserve a life without hassles. We aren't lording it over anybody or feeling entitled. Alright, we can't expect to live a charmed life, but, after all, what have we done to deserve the serious roubles that sometimes come our way?

In your own life, how do you understand the relationship between ease in living and goodness in character and action?  

Reflection on Rashi's commentary on Genesis 37:1, 2 and 39:6  

37:1 It is further expounded upon [as follows]: “dwelt” (verse 1) When Jacob sought to dwell in tranquility, the troubles of Joseph sprang upon him. The righteous seek to dwell in tranquility. Said the Holy One, blessed be He, “What is prepared for the righteous in the world to come is not sufficient for them, but they seek [also] to dwell in tranquility in this world!”

37:2 and he was a lad: He behaved childishly, fixing his hair and touching up his eyes so that he would appear handsome. [From Gen. Rabbah 84:7]

39:6 and Joseph had handsome features: As soon as Joseph found himself [in the position of] ruler, he began eating and drinking and curling his hair. Said the Holy One, blessed be He: “Your father is mourning and you curl your hair! I will incite the bear against you.” Immediately afterwards “his master’s wife lifted up her eyes.” [from Tanchuma Vayeshev 8]​​​​​​​

RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

The tensions that come with family can be both complex and complicated. We sometimes support each other, and at times, we compete. And there are so many different ways to understand the thoughts and motivations of parents and grandparents, our children, our siblings, our cousins, our aunts, and our uncles. We can be furious at them or feel very loving toward them, and sometimes we feel both at once. 

How do we wind our way through this maze, and what counts as "successful"? Who would you choose if you had a magic wand that put you into the mind/heart of someone in your family? Who would you choose to give the wand to in order for them to understand you?

NOVEMBER 11 — 12, 2022
 
Jonathan Gross, a Bronze Star Recipient, served in the United States Military from 2004-2012 including a 2 year long deployment to Iraq with the 101st Airborne Division. He served as a JAG Legal Officer, and taught Constitutional Law at West Point. He has received Badges for Combat Action, Parachuting, and Helicopter Rappelling. Jonathan has worked as an Attorney with the NYPD since 2003, and clerked for Chief Judge Dennis Jacobs on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. Jonathan has also served as a Paramedic since 1999, was a 9/11 First Responder, Covid Front-Liner, and has worked at NY Presbyterian Hospital since 2003.

HASHKAMA - RABBI BLANCHARD'S BLURB

In the Hebrew Bible, an angel is a messenger of G-d. For some, Maimonides, for example, natural forces that accomplish the Divine will are angels. For others, however, angels are always supernatural agents of G-d. We tend to understand, even see, our reality as given by our five senses, assimilating new perceptions to our everyday experiences. Paradoxically, people who often see their daily world as the intersection of the natural and the supernatural might hardly notice the presence of an angel. They would assimilate the supernatural into their natural patterns of perception. People who live in a world permeated by the supernatural might not " see" angels. After all, they see so many of them that they start to see them as people.
