Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

A simple truth: We sometimes have something important to say, a message that will make a difference in the lives of those we care about. Actually saying it, however, is not always easy. Although we seek fluency, we stammer. We seek  eloquence, but we just can't find exactly the right words. Which is more important elegance and grace in speech  or the meaning of the message that we send? Or, in the end, perhaps it is simply our reaching out that is most important. What we must never do is deny our message - however hard it is to speak it.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

Creating something new in our lives may mean that we  have to leave where, and even, who we are. In a sense, we need to become "strangers" to who we are and where we were. Sometimes we have to strike out in new directions, never to return; we leave childhood behind and never go back. Or, sometimes it is if we have been pushed out, exiled,  from our home in but having hopes of returning renewed and rebuilt. We may leave our childhood family but we hope to be "reunited" with them later at a higher level.  Paradoxically, there may even be projects which require us to leave our existing home--a kind of exile-- in order to seek a life that is or could become more truly and profoundly our home.  We accept exile from the comfort of the present moral limits of our character, seeking to "jump to a new a level"--- to a space in which we hope to find that we are more deeply at home ethically. Or, we may leave our home seeking or accepting a mission to better our world, hoping that this better world will be our new home. Why do we do this? Why accept the loss and the exile? Are we sometimes in pursuit of the fulfillment of deeper dreams, promises and possibilities? Or, do we sometimes feel that if we stay any longer, we will be forever trapped or lost? Or both? One thing is for sure: In life, long term treading water is a mistake.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

Our mistakes, especially our moral errors, need to be rectified.  We remove our guilt by correcting our misdeeds. If we think of moral error as a form of sickness,  then we need to be cured of our disease, to be healed. Or, if we see our misdeeds as a breaking or shattering of our integrity, then we need to be fixed, repaired, even re-formed. Finally, when we focus on the damage done to others or to our environment, then we talk about making things good or right, even making others whole.

Where does "punishment for immoral acts" fit into all this? Does chastisement as punishment heal or cure us? Is it a price we pay to make things right? Is it a kind  of re-formation?  Or, perhaps, our pain is connected to the visible signs of remorse that we need to show to others in order to be forgiven by them?

These are not easy questions to answer. What we do know, however, is that "saying sorry"  can not be a free ride. The true remorse necessary for rectifying our immoral actions expects that there will be a price to be paid. Given the way that the world is, moral error and its rectification calls forth purgatorial suffering,  We really don't like it, but, in all honesty, anything less is superficial and pathetically self-exculpatory.  And, of course, once we finish the process, we are liberated; we are reconnected with others. We become free to live better lives.

[Thoughts occasioned by reflection on the Biblical story of Joesph and his brothers.]

Chanukah Safety from West Side Hatzoloh

Dear Neighbor,

Here are some quick reminders to keep you and your family safe over Chanukah!

Lighting the Menorah:

  • Never leave Chanukah candles unattended!
  • Place the Menorah on a sturdy heat resistant surface away from anything that can catch fire including walls, curtains, cabinets, wooden and plastic tables, tablecloths, etc.
  • Light candles where they can’t be reached by children and where they won’t be knocked over
  • Keep surfaces and surrounding areas clear from burned matches, wick trimmings, oil residue, and other debris
  • Do not light “school project” Menorahs made from materials that can burn (wood, plastic, etc.)

Cooking Latkes:

  • Keep small children away from hot oil and cooking areas
  • Keep hands, hair and sleeves away from open flame
  • Use extra caution when carrying hot food around children
  • Designate ovens, stoves, and heat containing appliances as a “NO GO ZONE” for children
  • Never put water on a grease fire, use a fire extinguisher and call the Fire Department

Wishing you all a Happy and Healthy Chanukah!

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

Where do we find a certain depth of meaning in our lives? Most of the time,  we find it in the concrete experiences and possibilities of our daily lives. But, sometimes, for a moment, we aspire to dream big dreams--to dare, if just for an instant, to do something exceptional. However, as we act, we need to pay careful attention to the why of our imagined "great" possibilityIf we seek to do something extraordinary out of our of own vanity-because it is we who will be great--then we are actually contracting our focus. lessening who we are. But if we seek what is substantial  for others, or significant for "all of us", then, if only for a moment,  we are indeed changing the world-- making a kind of mini-renewal of creation.

[Occasioned by Genesis [Bereishit 37:2ff])

May you and yours have a time of joy and light, freedom and rededication to all that you hold dear

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

When it comes to hurting others, we can't seem to help ourselves.  We make mistakes and our mistakes sometimes leave unfinished business behind us. We know  that we must take responsibility for what we have done to wrong others, even when it was unintentional or even necessary as the lesser of two evils.   Facing those we have wronged is difficult and sometimes frightening, especially when they are family or close friends,  A part of us wants to forget, to just pull the covers up over our heads.

Sometimes  "forgetting" is possible, although difficult. But not always. Then we must live through the awful moment of returning to face the ones we have hurt and own the  consequences of our offenses, misdeeds and mistakes. When we do have to look our "victims"  in the eye, we may first try and "buy off"their pain and anger with gifts and even flattery.  When this fails, we pray for the courage  to stand up to their rebuke and condemnation and, if, no matter what we do, they seek revenge, we hope for the courage to confront and endure it successfully. After all, we cannot allow our life to collapse under the weight of our mistakes. In the end, if we are very fortunate, we may find reconciliation. And, if not, a bearable and safe way to part ways.

Reflections occasioned by Genesis 32:4-33:20 and the accompanying rabbinic exposition and commentary.

Hashkama Minyan - Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

To every thing there is a season and time for every purpose under heaven. There are times when we leave and know that we are never to return. There are times when we know we must not leave, we must stay. And there are times when we leave, knowing that we will return after the purpose of our journey has been fulfilled. On these  journeys we have a purpose in mind but we often find that we have in fact been assigned a more profound task . We were quite unaware of this task when we set out and then, along the way, we are "interrupted" by a  much greater possibility. And we pause, take in that a new vista has been opened to us and think: This is truly the place where heaven meets earth and I did not know it. I vow to keep the promise of this special experience with me as I continue on my journey, knowing that it will be with me until I return home.

Thoughts occasioned by Genesis 28:10-22

Hashkama Minyan | Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

Most of us see that there is evil in the world. Evil is a moral category and we moderns and postmoderns are fairly comfortable with moral categories. But we are far less at home with the idea that some actions or objects spiritually befoul, contaminate and pollute our world. That there are somehow  "impure forces" --different from the powers that corrupt us morally--at work around us blocking our way to what we might call " our sacred centers", that is, the places where we encounter or commune with " the transcendent".  Awareness of such  impure realities---taboo/tumah-- are all over  pre-modern cultures. We moderns seem to be tone deaf or color blind when it comes to perceiving them. The best we might be able to say is that, to the extent that the fullness of life is associated with what is sacred to us, there are also actions, objects and situations linked to death---decay, corpses, diseases, weapons. And,  there are realities and illusions that join these " impure forces" with moral corruption and , in the end, kill us, keep us from being who we are when we are profoundly in touch with what connects us to the transcendent. They are the lies, the deceits, the abuses of power, the moments of indifference to the suffering of others that yield the deepest evils--exploitation, oppression even genocide--that are somehow more that morally evil or corrupt--that are "impure and polluting".

Thoughts occasioned by the rabbinic and mystical commentaries on Genesis 25: 22.23, and Malachi 1 and 2.

Hashkama Minyan | Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

Most of us want to leave a moral and, even a spiritual, legacy, We want the values and ideals that we lived for to continue after us. I suppose that for many of us this is also true in the short run. When one stage or step in our life is finishing we want what we have worked for to be continued by the people who come after us, even though we have moved on.   Leaving a legacy means finding "an heir"--one or more people who replace us. It's more than the issue of succession in organizational leadership.  We are looking for people who will "keep the promise".

How are we to select those who will inherit our moral and spiritual legacy?  Some chose their immediate or extended family. They try and  keep leadership within their "clan".  Others trust their legacy to the people of a particular place--their city, their region, their country.  Finally, many believe that having good character is the most important factor in selecting who will continue their moral and spiritual legacy. Most of us would like to have all three--family members of good character who will continue to live where we did.

In our changing and mobile world, however, family, place and character do not always go together.  So we have to decide:  What is the most important ? Not an easy task, but if we want to make a lasting difference, in the short and in the long run, we have to try.  And what happens if , as so often is the case, we don't choose those who will come after us or we want those to whom we expect to leave our legacy to make their own choices, have their own ideals?  My own experience has been that, looking back, those who followed built on what I had done,  Whether it is what I would have done, or even what I would  have wanted them to do, has not turned our to be all that important. What has been most significant is that they made something good out of what I left to them.

Hashkama Minyan | Rabbi Blanchard's Blurb

Life is not just staying put. Sometimes we are in motion. And when we are on the road, we are most often looking for something--a moment of beauty, an interesting encounter, an unexpected insight. Finding what we seek takes a lot of patience. We have to learn to wait, to be open to the unexpected appearance of a intellectual-emotional-spiritual moment when things fall into place. Even then there is always an imperfection in our vision, an anomaly or a craziness in our world which reminds us that we need to continue our journey, that we can not just settle down with "our truth". For in that moment, and just for that moment, we must surrender the past, we must refuse to look back toward where we have been and only look forward toward where this present encounter or vision is taking us. If we don't, we fix and harden. But if we do push on forward into what is yet unknown, then despite even grave errors, we will create  new realities---imperfect realities to be sure, but--please excuse the cliche-- they will be steps toward a better world.

Parsha Thought by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard

Sometimes things feel so thoroughly bad, even wasted, that we wish we could start all over again. These are the days when we dream of turning our world over completely. At these moments, we hope, even aspire,  to profoundly recreate our whole lives. While I do not wish to discourage anyone who can, in fact, become a saint through a radical act of sheer will, I have to say that, in general, most of us can't become a different person or have a completely new life. And , truth be told, we shouldn't seek this. Real change, genuine moral and spiritual growth, is gradual and necessarily connected to the good that we have already achieved. For me and my friends, the moral and spiritual life is made up  of ongoing little acts of self re-creation that renew, expand and increase the good we have done.

RABBI'S NOTES

  • Social Distancing guidelines are still enforced at all minyanim. Please self check symptoms at home. Masks must be worn at all times on premises. If you do not feel well, or are awaiting test results - stay home.
  • Community Leining: We will discharge the 'Tzibbur's' obligation to hear the Parshios that were missed in the Spring by distributing the leining throughout the final days of Shemini Atzeres & Simchas Torah.
  • Aravos: Have been generously donated this year. Contributions are still welcome - please deposit them in the drop boxes in the Bet Medrash lobby or Office Door, or make an online payment at www.OZNY.org/Payment.php
  • Hoshanos: 7 Circuits will be conducted around the Bima in each minyan. They will be limited to 5 (Beis Medrash) to 18 (Main Shul) men depending on the location of the minyan. Those comfortable participating should take turns at each circuit. Only 1 Torah will be taken out.
  • Hakafos: Like Hoshanos, Hakafos will be limited to the number of participants. We will sing one song, and have 1 Short Dvar Torah at each Hakafa from members of the community.
  • Kol Nearim: Parents are asked to keep their children with them at their side
  • Simchas Torah Aliyos: Both the Hashkama and the Main Minyanim will conduct only 5 Aliyas, plus the Chasan Maftir, Chasan Torah, and Chasan Bereishis. The Main Shul will host Aliyas as well for the additional missed Parshios to be read throughout Yom Tov.

Parsha Points by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard

Traditionally, spirituality, especially "spiritual action", clears our thoughts and "cleanses" our character. Of course, this "purification" is limited by the scope of our action. Performing rituals only affects the objects, people, ideas  and feelings that are connected to the ritual. A "ritualized |" breakfast may improve the morning, the day, the participants and , to a limited extent, their co=workers and friends.  But it does not go beyond the limits. If the focus of the spirituality/spiritual action. is expanded to " how we are living" as a whole--meals, rest and recreation, etc.---it offers the possibility of clearing purifying our lives in general--our thoughts, our imagination , our character. Sometimes, we need a week of "spiritual living". "Purity of heart" is not easy to come by, but the wider the scope of our spiritual vision and practice, the more we can move toward this ideal. We ask ourselves: How does what are we doing, how are we living, clear away what does not belong--the alibis and excuses, the soothing falsehoods, the confusing fantasies and temptations, the compromising urges, and the self-seeking orientation?

Parsha Points by Rabbi Tsvi Blanchard: Thoughts at this Time of Self-examination

As human beings, we are responsible for ourselves and our actions. This means, among other things, that we need to make up for the damage we have done to others--their person, their feelings, their dignity, and their property. Here are just some of the thoughts I had that are taken from the first chapter of the Talmud Tractate Bava Kamma that deals with damages and damagers.  I have found it helpful. I hope that you will too.

On the whole, we need to repair / compensate others who have been damaged by anything for which we are responsible and over which we have control--typically this means property/animals/our body. I think that we should also think about the damage we have done through hurtful language and behavior.  This includes:

a. damage we have done by creating in our world/society realities that constitute physical, emotional, intellectual, moral  or spiritual "dangers" .. potentially harmful ideas, situations, experiences.

b. we need to pay careful attention to damage that we did by initiating something which, joined with other forces around us, took on a life of its own and hurt others--snide comments, mockery of others, , gossip, etc.

c. We need to be careful about those to whom we entrust the things and powers for which we are responsible. Are they people who are worthy of our trust? Do they have the necessary capabilities?

d. We need to be aware of the damage we cause simply by using our natural powers in the world in a commonly accepted fashion.. Just because ti is the custom/nature of humanity to act in these ways does not mean that we shouldn't look for alternatives that do not cause. Self seeking behavior is natural to humans, and we can't be taken to court for the damage that sometimes happens to others just from our doing so, but we still need to think carefully about how being " human only too human" can hurt others.

e.  We need to be aware of some motives for damage:

Sometimes we simply intend to cause  damage.. hurting people just to show our power.

Sometimes we are caught up in seeking our own pleasure , although this ends up hurting  others

Sometimes we are "just following our nature" and the pain of others is  "collateral damage".

Sometimes we are just too busy, self-involved or distracted to notice if others are being hurt.

May we all work to merit a good life.

In this season of the Jewish New Year may we all be written and sealed in the book of life.

Rabbi Blanchard's Parsha Reflection

Isaiah 54:1-10, uses the barren woman as a symbol.  A  pregnant woman suggests fecundity,  one or many new generations, and even the restoration and renewal of life. Typically, a barren woman symbolized the opposite. It reminds us that the transformation from barren to fruitful is not really limited to actual pregnancy and birth. Women do not actually to give birth to children in order to be generative. The symbol ,then, gestures toward  personal, national and spiritual rebirth.

In our own lives, we have periods where we are blocked, uncreative and uninspired. Our work life  or our relationships seem to be stalled, going nowhere. We lack imagination.  Realizing that alienation/exile from opportunities, possibilities, and hopes is never permanent , we ask: " What are we to do? " Then we begin our answer by recalling the resources that have worked in the past but are now eclipsed.  We assume that these resources are still present.....work on trusting in the personal/spiritual power still within us....imagine a world of expanding experience.....picture making space for new ways of renewing the times and spaces of our lives.  We talk with friends....reread the books that inspired us......listen to the music that has always lifted us up. Sometimes we just sing. Opening ourselves to regeneration and rediscovery, we renew our faith in ourselves and trust in the meaning of our lives. Barrenness and Exile are not permanent. Love is permanent.

Isaiah 54:  10
Though the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed
My love [loving kindness] shall never depart from you
and My covenant of peace [wholeness]
shall not be removed--
says the One who [ in generosity and com[passion] loves you, the Eternal

Rabbi Blanchard's Parsha Reflection

The pursuit of justice is at the heart of Judaism. O.K. It's a cliche but we need to note that it's an important cliche.  Justice and fairness are central ideals of the Bible and the rabbinic tradition. [Torah]. The Bible showcases both legal rules and principles of just law. Justice is in the law. But justice is also in the application of the law to specific cases, both in the correctness of the application---the just judgement that learned and expert judges make.. and also in the manner in which the correct ruling is reached-- the fairness. of the legal process which is impartial, treating all involved equally and with dignity, not letting either power or wealth determine how participants are treated. And, of course, the entire proceeding must also not only be, but also be seen to be fair and just. All told, in the Bible and its traditional commentaries, anything besides justice and fairness is crooked and perverse.

Although we are not all judges, we spend a good deal of our lives making assessments and judgements of ourselves and of the people around us--our immediate family, our extended family [relatives], our friends and acquaintances, the leaders and members of the communities to which we belong.  Here too we need to be careful to seek justice and fairness. But life is not a court of law and so we need to do more. We also need to seek to love these people, to care about them and when possible even to help  them.

Much of the complexity and difficulty of our lives derives in part from the fact that the pursuit of justice and fairness is a central ideal of our lives. But it results just as much from our hope that we can find and also sometimes go to a realm beyond judgement and justice to a place of love, forgiveness, acceptance and reconciliation.   The Hebrew Bible and rabbinic tradition teaches, urges, even demands that we pursue both of these ideals. But we find no clear statement of how to do both at once. Again we find that we need courage, faith and persistence. There is the transcendent  spirituality of our lives.

These thoughts are the result of my reflections on Deuteronomy 16:18ff. and the traditional rabbinic commentary on them.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection

There are transitional moments in life . Moments that we anticipate, prepare for, worry about and look forward to, for example, graduating from HighSchool or University, beginning our professional life, starting a business, marrying or becoming a parent. Life is "bigger" after them; they bring more possibilities as well as more demands. Rules, obligations, opportunities, pleasures, etc. are one way before them and another, hopefully more expanded, way after them. If we make the transition well, our lives are blessed; if we make the change wrongly, life can sometimes feel hard to accept, even cursed.

One issue that doing well or poorly often depends on is how we engage moral reasoning and desire in the transition. When desire comes first, the best that we can hope for is that what we desire is good and reason will help us to acquire it. But our seeking it. desiring it , even "lusting" after it, does not make it good. It just makes it what we want badly. When we use desire to steer our way through these transitional moments , they may very well end up  cleverly done but "cursed".

When moral reasoning comes first, we have  a decent chance of knowing what is good. Then we may engage desire to motivate us to persist in our search for it.   We want what is good badly enough to work hard for it. When we navigate the change by reasoned moral ideals, we have a good chance of ending up "blessed"

But neither approach is a guarantee. We can have the good luck [ or good upbringing] to desire what is good. We can do a poor job of thinking our ideals through and end up chasing illusions, windmills or worse. Perhaps we should use both approaches--create a dialectic that moves back and forth between them, tempering our desires with moral reasoning and seeking only the good that is also part of our deepest dreams. That may work better but it too is not guaranteed to lead directly to a blessing instead of a curse. Hence, facing these great moments of "opening" in our lives also takes courage, faith and persistence.

These reflections were based on Deuteronomy 11:26ff, 12:20ff and the classical rabbinic interpreters of these sections.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection

How do we live a good life in order to be worthy of the love and blessing that comes our way? It surely is not enough that we do what is good simply in order to protect ourselves from suffering, or merely to benefit ourselves. It does not seem to me enough that we do what is right and good so that others will think well of us, or even so that we act according to what our society sees as appropriate. This kind of action rarely gets past self interest. Even when it does benefit others it is primarily rooted in our search for payoff or for our own personal success.  In fact, it is mostly about "me".

To my way of thinking, to actually be worthy of the love and blessing that comes our way we have to start living beyond "I. me. mine"---even sophisticated versions of this , in which my "I-me-mine" also benefits your "I-me-mine". We need to reach for the common good that binds us beyond even the mutual agreement of self interested "social contracts". We need to seek the principles and purposes of our common good.  We seek what is rooted in realities that transcend the limits of our own given natural desires, perceptions, purposes and interests.  To be worthy of love and blessing, we need to seek what transcends us, whether this is philosophical, religious, mystical or spiritual.

These remarks are reflections on Deuteronomy 7:12ff.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection

“Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the more often and steadily we reflect upon them: the starry heavens above me and the moral law within me."

Sometimes, as we experience the cosmos, we are awestruck. For moderns, it is often the above classic quote from Immanuel Kant that expresses the source of this feeling. I think we have somewhat the same dichotomy in some traditional Jewish sources. On the one hand, the created order of nature and the miracles that reveal a God who is greater than nature. On the other, the moral order and the God who institutes and, at the limit, enforces it.  Although we are not very clear on the relationship between the moral and natural orders, our experience  of their compelling power is often the source of a spiritual consciousness.  As I study these sources, I too find my mind filled with ever new and increasing admiration and awe.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection: Devarim

For most people, life is good, but it is also  dotted with difficult, trying, painful moments. We don't want them to happen, but they do and we do our best to navigate them. If possible, we don't do this alone but,  as the Beatles put it, we "get by with a little help from our friends".

Some of those moments are the result of our own,  often moral,  mistakes. Here is a thought for those of us who want to be one of the "friends" that helps others sweeten or soften the demanding moments in life  that are due to their own moral errors :

First, assume that even an immoral or unrighteous act originates in a good place that ends up distorted.  We know from research, for example, that in intimate relationships, painful, brutal  arguments are most often actually about preserving the relationship. That is,   such arguing  "begins" in a belief--often unstated or even below the level of awareness-- the relationship would be intolerable if things are not done as they ask, or if they are not in control. They might have to leave. They are arguing so that they can stay and not leave. The origin is good --preserving the relationship--but it gets distorted into a search for dominance or control rather than for greater understanding and creative compromise.

Second, use the emotional or cognitive power of the original goal  to overcome the negative forces producing the problem and find better ways to achieve the goal. . In our example, if they can get in touch with how important preserving their relationship is to them, perhaps they [ or you with them ] can find better alternatives to the endless painful arguments. The more power you, as a friend, have to reorient them toward the "original" [good] source, the more likely it is that they will " get by with a little help from their friends".    Granted, this approach is  not perfect, not easy to do and doesn't always make things better,  but , in a difficult world, it offers one more possibility for fixing things and bringing people together.

***The above thought is based on my understanding and adaptation  of the Hasidic commentary of the Noam Elimelech on Parashat Devarim and the related doctrine of "sweetening" judgement found in the Keter Shem Tov.

Rabbi's Blanchard's Parsha Reflection

Let's think about the power of human speech.  We can start with Numbers 30:2ff which presents laws of vows.  In traditional sources, making a "vow"  means that we take something that was permitted for our use and deliberately use language to make it forbidden for our use--- "this cake, until now I could eat it, from now on,  it is forbidden to me."  From our point of view, we alter the nature or meaning of the object. It was "neutral", we could do with it what we wanted, Now, it has become something we can not use.

Why would we make a material object forbidden to us?  Maybe we are on a diet and want to strengthen our resolve to do without it. We speak  a vow that makes fattening foods out of bounds. Or, we want to sanctify something, give it a special holiness. We speak a vow that turns it into something that can be used solely for sacred purposes.  Perhaps, we want these particular rings to serve as a symbol of our marriage and so we "vow" that they are our wedding ring. Or, if we are less noble or more angry, we want to create a distance between ourselves and others, so we "vow" that their property is off limits to us--- so that we can never visit with them or eat a meal with them again. It was these negative kinds of vows, as well as the possibility that we might fail to keep our word, that brought Jewish tradition to discourage the making of vows.

Speech can also be a mistake. Can we correct a " speech" mistake?  Can we, for example, correct having made a vow for the wrong reasons or a vow that has unforeseen  negative consequences? If we regret that we made the commitment, we often turn to people whose wisdom we trust. We talk it through with them, and sometimes even give them the power to "annul" our vow--  for example, we give them the power to make us feel that, since we would never have made the vow if we had known the  the damage that keeping it would bring about, we no longer required to keep that vow.

Notice: Human speech is a social reality; we do not vow in our own private language.  This is the power of human speech: it creates personal and social realities and in doing so it can support the best in us or amplify the worst. Clearly, we need to be careful about what we "vow". Even more, we need to be careful about how we use speech to construct our world, its limits and its possibilities.
